rabbitfluff
I have a greenhouse full of green tomatoes - does anyone have any tips on how to get them to ripen please? There are a lot that have a hint of orange but they don't seem to be getting any further. The leaves are getting diseased (blight I think) so I'd like to get them used as quick as possible. I know there's always chutney but I still have loads of that left from last year! Thanks.
kinsk
I've been told that if you put them in a drawer with brown paper bags they ripen, not sure what the brown paper does, or if indeed it works at all. Others say a banana. I gave all our to the pigs.
chickencam
If you want to ripen them on the plant take any old tatty leaves off and any that are blocking the fruit from the light. Some people take most of the leaves off at this stage to encourage ripening. I took a lot of leaves and useless growth off mine last week and quite a few more have ripened since. Otherwise you will have to bring them in and either leave them on a window sill or in a confined space with a banana. I prefer the sunny window sill option, because it keeps them sweeter. I roasted a load of my less good ones with seasoning, herbs and garlic cloves yesterday then mixed them with some roasted aubergine, peppers, onions and courgette, then blitzed the whole lot with a stick blender and made a thick sauce, I froze half of it and used the other half with a small amount of mince to make a lasagna, it was scummy. I think there are some recipes out there for green tomatoes that don't involve chutney too.
sjp
I'd take all the leaves( bar the top 2 or 3) off this late in the season plus stop feeding them and only water enough to kepp the plant ticking over. if yoy have blight in the green house you need to increase the air flow personally I don't close the green house door at all once I've got tomatoes growing in there it's been open now since mid June and will stay open until my tomatoes have finnished or I get fed up of waiting for them to ripen and let the chucks have them
Cinnamon
Fried green Tomatoes (as in at the Whistle Stop Cafe) are amazing. There are a lot of green ones this year,as summer was so late....
