My chicks... 24 hours on

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I posted yesterday in the chickens forum the fact that I'd come back home with a few chicks (instead of the POL I was intending to buy! )

So I thought I'd better come over to the chick section to say hi... and show of the little girls one day on :D

I've been sat watching them literally all day so can only assume that everone else will find them as addictively cute as I do :lol:

I'm new to this and, although I've read and read and read, if you have any hints or tips then they will be gladly accepted!

Still no names I'm afraid, but here they are...

Number 1... Always the first to come running and has started stepping in my hand to be picked up!

Number 2... The noisy, greedy one

Numer 3... The small and shy one, but she's getting braver every minute :)

All 3

Tee hee, thanks everyone, they really are lovely. I've done no housework whatsoever today... I've been in all day and OH had to make his own dinner when he got home from work!

Can anyone give me some advice on how much floor space they will need as they get a bit bigger? They're just in a plastic box at the moment which is fine for now but I'm conscious that in a couple of weeks they'll be wanting more room. I'm looking into buying / borrowing an indoor rabbit cage, but what size would I need for the 3 of them up to 7(ish) weeks old? Once they're off heat I plan to keep them out into their coop but keep it in the shed until the spring appears.

Not too sure, but I had a brooder just over 1m in length and half a meter wide and that was about enough room for 5 bantam chicks until 5 weeks, I put in a branch so they could perch and they seemed like that was enough room, although that was a little of a squeeze at the end. however, by that time they were outside all day and only sleeping inside at night. Hope this helps I'm sure this would be enough space for three LF girls :)

I bought a large indoor rabbit cage for my chicks and it was plenty big enough until they went outside, but I only had bantams in it.

The orps I hatched for a friend were only with me for the first couple of weeks when they lived in a large pastic box at school for the children to enjoy and they grew very quickly

Emjoy your chicks, as mimi5 said enjoy them as they do grow into little chickens really fast.
