KateC
I have three hybrids who have never really had a heavy moult before even though they are 18 months old. One of them is now really losing a lot of feathers. I noticed this morning that she is actually bald in some places. She had appeared to be the dominant one in the past but now seems quite hesitant with the others. Do you think the others are plucking the feathers out, she doesn't seem to have any blood on her and apart from looking fed up she seems to be eating ok. I have given them some poultry spice in their food and some tonic in their water this morning. I have also given them some mealworms with grated cheese and cod liver oil as a treat. The other two dived on it but although she ate it she didn't push forward. Her comb in also a little bit droopy. Any advice is gratefully received. Thank you, Kate
sage
Kate You have my Polly by the sounds of it. She's an 18month old top chuck, been in a heavy moulting for over 4 weeks and has lost weight. She was always very dominant but went quiet when she started to moult. Just this week she has started to have a few pecks at the others ( as if to say I'm back) but she is still last to get up, first to bed and last to the treats as if she cannot be bothered. She's getting suppliments so hoping she back on form soon. Sage
KateC
Hi Sage Thanks for your reply. Certainly sounds the same. It's due to warm up tomorrow so at least they'll feel warmer! Kate
Mrs_B
Hi, KateC! Can you see new feathers growing on the bald patches? The appear as little 'spikes' - my columbine who normally has a 'feather hat' on her head is bald there now and has spikes coming through - so OH and I are nicknaming her 'hedgehog' hehe. Mealworms are a great idea for protein as the chickens need protein to grow their lovely new feathers x
Valkyrie
Another of my pekins is almost out of her moult - she had been shedding here and there but is still pale. She also hangs back, but will happily come forward for some sunflower seeds and pine kernels. I'll also give them tuna with c l o - but in 2 bowls so they can have a better chance of some nourishment when the other piggy wiggys have had their turn.
