Ebay issue - why do folks not read listings?

Recommended Posts

I had a large item listed on ebay - one of those kneeling orthopaedic chairs. The bloke who won it turns out to be located in Edinburgh... my listing specifically states 'collection in person only' and that I can't accommodate courier collections (been let down before waiting in all day for one which didn't turn up).

He sent me a first message saying that he hadn't read the listing properly and not seen that I don't do courier collections and asking if I could be at home for a 4 hour courier collection window. I replied that it wasn't possible as i work full time and am not around during the day, hence the clause in my listing. Got a very rude message back asking whether I just can't be bothered and goes on to slate my (very clear) listing, which he just hadn't read.

I have opened a dispute to cancel the transaction... the listing is perfectly clear

The item is available for collection from *** only.

Boring small print:

Terms of sale: All items are sold as-seen so please take a good look at all posted photos and read the description thoroughly; I endeavour to make sure that all photos are representative of the condition of each item and clearly show any faults they may have. I haven't yet had any unsatisfied customers, but you never know.

I will accept payment by PayPal or cash on collection; where PayPal is concerned, payment is due within 48 hours after auction ends. Collection and payment by cash must also be confirmed within 48 hours.

Where the buyer asks to collect the item I will go out of my way  to make this collection easy for them; if collection isn't arranged within 10 days of the sale being completed then I will contact them before refunding any payment and relisting the item (sorry folks, but I have had a couple of no-shows). Delivery (where applicable) will be by economy post with proof of posting.

Sorry but I will not post outside the UK, nor can I arrange couriers/accept courier collection.

He is an idiot, who wants the item & was trying his luck, in the hopes that you would accommodate him.

I would put money on him reading it,understanding it,but having a punt anyway.

This happens ALL the time.

Now that sellers cannot leave negative or neutral feedback for buyers, buyers have no reason to play by the rules & will often chance it.

Personally I wouldn't cancel the transaction, but open a dispute against him as a non paying bidder. This way he will get a strike - 3 of those & he is in trouble with eBay.

However,by cancelling the transaction it does mean that he cannot neg you, which it sounds like he may well try to do

If he does,I would go to eBay with a complaint about it,see if they will remove it,as they have done for me in the past.

Just out of interest,as well as your clearly stated terms & conditions, you did have it as collection by person in the shipping bit, didn't you?

We have taken to putting COLLECTION ONLY.WE CAN NOT SHIP THIS ITEM is big red letters on our listings for large items now

Thanks Sarah, I have opened a case to cancel the transaction so that I can re-list it.

I think that the listing T&Cs were clear enough to not give him a leg to stand on. I hadn't issued an invoice, nor had he paid. I wouldn't mind, but he was quite rude in his second message; I told him that in my Joyce Grenfell tone

Numpty

I have had this on 2 or 3 occasions. It makes me really mad because the people ignore the listing statement and then expect you to change the collection to suit them. When it is a large or heavy item it isnt worth the hassle of waiting in for a courier or sending by courier. Some people.................................................

I gave up selling on ebay years ago because of idiots. Listed a £200 dress and stated it had a mark on the front which would need dry cleaning, sold it for £10 then got slated because it "had a mark and the front and needed dry cleaning" Selling a dress for £10 I may as well bin it as pay £7-8 to have it dry cleaned.

Have a load of stuff I need to sell but am dreading the hassle of ebay again.

Hope you get it sorted, sounds like you've done the best thing.

You can relist it anyhow, via your 'My eBay' page, then you will get your sellers fee refunded when the case is closed :D

Good luck re selling it.

Make sure you edit the listing saying WHY its been relisted,or people who were looking at it last time may get the wrong idea about why the winning bidder didn't complete the sale.

Thanks for the comments guys. On the whole I haven't had too many problems (except for the guy who turned up to collect an armchair in a Smart car then suggested that I might deliver it to him  ). The person has messaged back apologising for his tone after I reprimanded him in my best Joyce Grenfell tones, he still had to have a jab though so I have ignored him and it's back on sale.

Why couldn't he just apologise in the first place?

Was there a close bid by an unsucessful bidder? You could offer it to them as a second chance offer

It depends on how many bidders were in the running first time, if there were a few then maybe its worth relisting. if there were only two then your chap helped bump up the bidding which means re-listing may not bring as much money

Hope that makes sense!

Thats a pain in the .....

Hope it all goes well, in November last year I excitedly bid on something so excited I had found the item I didnt read the collection only bit (ahhhhhhhhhh) the seller was briliant and luckilly I got out bid so neither me or the seller had any problems but it has definately made me really really look at the listing first

Given the fact that you enter into a legal contract when you bid on e-bay (which is made clear)it does amaze me how relaxed and laid back buyers can be! We listed a solid metal railway sign as COLLECT ONLY and some chap in Bristol (we are in South Oxford) bid and won and then asked if we could send it! When we said yes but it will cost you another tenner we hit probs :wall::doh:

Hope you have better luck with the relisting Clare!

I've not had this problem on eBay but recently listed a large IKEA chest of drawers and shelf unit on Freecycle. I wrote out the listing carefully stating that it was approx 7' x 3' in size and so would need a van and two people to collect. A lady contacts me asking to take the unit, we faff around fixing a time to collect etc etc, then finally she asks could I please measure the unit so she would know which car to bring. I politely replied that, as per the original post the measurements were 7' x 3' and she would need a van and two people to shift it  The reply came back that she had missed that part of the original post, didn't have a car large enough or in fact anywhere to put it in her house! How she 'missed it' I have no idea - the listing was only 4 lines long, 3 of which were the details of measurements and vehicle needed to collect!
