Chicken deficient

morehens wobble

Recommended Posts

I'm having a bit of a dilemma. I'm planning on adding a few newbies to my little flock this year.

Big Bird, aka Violet the Bluebelle is sadly not going to be with us that much longer :( I just want her to enjoy some summer sun first.

This will leave me with 4 bantam Wyandotte hens, 4 Pekin hens and a Pekin cockerel.

I was planning on branching out on egg colour with a bantam Welsummer and Araucana, but now I'm not SO sure, (sorry  ).

I love my Wyandottes and had vowed to get no more birds with fluffy feet, but there is just something about Pekins that makes me jealous whenever I see someone getting a new one, (I'm talking about you Mollyripkim! )

What should I do?!!!

This is a golden opportunity for some virtual chicken window shopping if anyone is interested... :D

Guilty as charged! , Polly is my first pekin and I just love her to bits despite only having her since Sunday. Admittedly she is two years old so I guess that helps but she is just so lovely to watch and is such a little character. I let her FR today and she had a good explore of everything and happily let me pick her up for a cuddle so I am sold on pekins now.

There's lots more pictures of my Pekins growing up here if you would like to see them all

Sorry, that probably hasn't helped cure you of Morehens disease has it

Ooo looks like you have an empty eglu . . . but you also seem to have quite a few Pekins. I'd say, make a list of all the things you just love about Pekins, and then get another breed that answers those things too. How about Sablepoots? I think the millefleur ones are just to die for

...you can get mille fleur pekins too...

I got Wyandotte bantams because I made a list of all the things I liked and did not like about Pekins, (fluffy feet in winter being on the not like list!), and they seemed perfect. In fact, they really are perfect, but there is just something about Pekins that still gets me. I'm not even sure what it is - I think it may be the way they look at you and the particular noise they make and how they are cuddly and feisty in equal measure!

I'm terrible with decisions like this!:lol:

My current thinking is more Pekins, in all sorts of beautiful colours :D

People say they don't lay well, but I think they do, especially when you consider that their eggs may only be half the size of those of some hybrids, yet the hens themselves weigh not even 1/6 of a small hybrid. There is the odd broody patch, but that can be useful!

I'm going to put it all on hold though for a while and make sure their are no repercussions from my neighbour's poorly flock :(

See now I'm the opposite and fast going off my mille Pekin, Kindle, she's rather a bossy boots and is picking on my favourite Thora Bird and Costa and making them squeal. Although Willo Longtail (Thora's baby) is standing no nonsense from her. Having said that Kindle is lovely to me and like to sit on my lap for a chat at coffee time.

I warned her this morning that she'll be looking for a new home like Mavis Cruet (SP Wyandotte) did. Rather love my wee Games and d'Anvers.
