Noooooooo - felted my new jumper!

Recommended Posts

Having spent a whole YEAR knitting my first jumper in a zillion years I finally finished it. Decided it needed a quick rinse through after all that time and despite the hand wash instructions on the label decided to rinse it in the machine (I know  ) . I didn't even use the hand wash setting I did it colder and shorter than that but it has come out felted and shrunken :( .

It's the Patons Eco Wool that everyone was knitting with last year and having read a bit more about it,it actually says somewhere it is good for felting, well I found that out all by myself :( .

So stupid, so cross with myself, had to have a rant.

Oh what a shame :( my husband did that to a newly knitted jumper of mine years ago by putting into our twin tub with everything else when we had only been living together for a few months.

I knitted the Eco wool cardigan last year, but haven't worn it much therefore it has yet to be washed. I normally wash all woollens on the cold handwash wool cycle in my machine including my ED's collection of vintage arrans, and they are fine, but maybe I will handwash that one.

It's just occurred to me, whilst I was cleaning the eglu out, that I should have washed my tension square first to see how that fared. So, that is in the machine now on the proper wool hand wash programme to see what happens to that.

Bit late now really but just interested.

E what :D a disappointment for you after taking so much time to knit. :( I remember buying a blue lambswool jumper with my first wage packet (many years ago) my mum washed it kindly but never fitted again doll size. :? So know how you feel. But u will always check the machine in the future. Can it be made into something else?

The tension square also came out felted so a different machine wash wouldn't have been the answer.

Can it be made into something else?

Well I didn't know anything about felting until today  and I don't really think I feel like making it into anything.

I had something similar recently when Rosie put a favourite jumper of mine in the machine, then the tumble dryer (I had purposely put it aside for handwashing  ) it was far too small so I gave it to Lesley who does felting.

I would quite happily donate it to Lesley, minus the buttons, if she can use it - I can also include the remaining balls of wool, I was going to make a hat to match but I've gone right off the idea now  .

PM me some details and I will post it on.

If you PM Lesley then she will pick it up and reply; she's not often on here these days and might miss this thread.

One thing worth checking.. is your washing machine plumbed in correctly? I ask as a neighbour's OH had attached the hot and cold feed pipes the wrong way around and when she thought she was cold washing, it was in fact using hot!
