Old bird comes up trumps

No, not me!

 

Lavinia, our elderly lavender pekin must be about 7.5 or 8 years old now and has been barren for at least 3 years. She's been a brilliant broody mum over the years but never produced any eggs. I was puzzled about the tiny cream coloured eggs appearing in the nest box and finally caught her in the act the other day. We are now graced with about 3 wee eggs a week... perfect quality, good strong shells and sturdy, well-formed yolks.

 

What a star!

Thanks Hazel, I will tell her. From memory, she had 5 or 6 chicks in that hatch; the wee brown ones were Barnevelder bantams from eggs which Lesley provided from her flock. One of them grew to be Betty, who you see below perched on Phil.

The yellow chick became Herbert the Sherbert (below) who was destined for the table.
