Sick chicken - tapeworm?

Recommended Posts

One of our chickens has been sick the last few days - tail down, not eaten well, not moving a lot.

her poos have been very watery with white streaky stuff in it. A couple have had long ribbon objects in them (see link) which almost look like tapeworm, but there aren't any segments.

They are white/grey and about 3 inches long. When dried they look like a blood coloured membrane.

been feeding her herbal wormer but without success.

Any ideas?

I agree that you need to get some decent wormer for your hens (Flubenvet) as herbal is no good. However, your chook is not going to pick up with worming if she's that poorly, especially if she's not eating, as you'll never get the wormer into her. This sounds more serious than a worm infestation to me and I think you need to take her to a vet. A hunched up chook who is not eating is very poorly indeed.

It's hard to say, but it could be a crop problem which is stopping food from passing through the digestive system causing the runny poos, or it could be a soft shelled egg which has ruptured inside the hen and you are seeing bits of egg shell membrane coming out in the poo. I think you need a proper diagnosis.

Looking at google images, it does look similar to some of the pictures.. Flubenvet is a good idea. The herbal supplements are less than useless in my experience. They are no longer allowed by law to call themselves wormers, as the costly testing has not been done. They have their use as a supplement, but not as a treatment.

Just as an update, she went off to the vet who couldn't find anything obviously wrong.

Anti-biotics were prescribed and within hours she was perking up.

The worm like bit was a total mystery to the vet.

Now a week on, she is back to normal. All very peculiar, but with a happy ending....
