I'm itching already! She now looks line a shorn sheep, and I'm not sure she's my dog! I think it must be something about this year though, as we've only had a couple in all the years we've had her. And the walk we do is the same.

Don't forget that if your dog is picking up ticks, you can too. Make sure you check yourself regularly.

Well I have finally had the chance to test out my tick hooks and can confirm that they are very easy and quick to use.

However, it wasn't Tango that picked up a tick, but my Dad! Hubby and I were holidaying in the Lake District last week with my parents and my Dad decided to go out walking in sandals (despite the 3rd degree from my Mum ) and came back with a tick attached to the top of his foot Thankfully I was able to whip out my trusty tick hook and deal with the little blighter

Lucky you could deal with it quickly - I take it they know what to watch out for in terms of infection/Lymes?

 

We have lots of deer around here so I always walk in long trousers with walking boots, or tucked into wellies. The dogs don't get them very often. but I put a wee bit of garlic powder in their food, and that helps to deter them.

Yes I've told him to look out for a halo rash around the bite but if he feels unwell in any way to get himself to the doctor and mention he's had a tick bite.

 

Mum was totally unsympathetic and said, 'Well what do you expect if you go out in those stupid sandals'

Your poor Dad! We have (fingers crossed) finally cleared the ticks but it has taken a tick collar plus constant checking with the tick twister tool. Frontline alone seemed to be less than effective. The vet told us that it was a very bad year for ticks and I believe her! I bet your Dad does too.

I have thought about wearing Seresto collars on my ankles as we have so many bleeping ticks!! I got my wellies on to pick my rhubarb the other day. Put arm down to pull first leaf & came up with massive tick on my arm (not biting me). Then yesterday watering the garden got one on my hand.

 

I always do the gardening or walk in the garden with white trousers on. I realise that sounds mad but at least I can see the little blighters!!!

Oh what a nuisance to have a tick problem in your garden. Light clothing is very sensible! It's recommended to wear light coloured clothes when walking in tick infested areas for that very reason, so you're doing the right thing. Do you splat them then you find them? Much better to squish them than to leave them to come back and bite another day. DEET insect repellant or Mosiguard if you don't want to use DEET should also help keep them off you. Nasty, nasty things!

I often wear a Citronella wristband (by NAF) when I'm walking.. mainly to keep mozzies and flies off, but I hope it also works on ticks.

 

 

I just pop it back in the seal-able wrapper when I'm not using it.

We use stuff called Prac tic from the vet. Monthly, until september, started in june. we seem to be ok the rest of the year!

They are awful, aren't they! Yes, I take great pleasure in squishing them. I usually put them on the floor and use a stone!

 

It is so annoying because we have land which we cannot really use because it really is infested! Thankfully they do seem to go away September to February!

 

Great suggestions, I've got some Deet and the band (your suggestions last time I was talking about ticks). But you know when you are just popping out to do something really quick like hang out the washing, or pick rhubarb, apart from tucking my trousers into my socks...I shall have to get fully kitted up!

Well it serves me right for at my Dad for getting a tick... I have now got fleas!

 

Yes, you read that right, *I* have got fleas, not the dog!

 

It (hopefully just the one) crawled up my trouser leg yesterday while we were out on a walk and has proceeded to feast on me since. I now have 5 humongous welts on my leg that really, really itch.

 

My clothes have gone through a hot wash, as will today's, and I've hoovered the house twice so far in case it's tried to set up home in the carpet. I've hoovered the settee out too. I'll run over the carpet with the steamer later. My bedding and the dog's bedding will all get chucked in the wash as well. I'm not taking any chances!

 

The dog has not scratched at all, and there's no sign of fleas or flea dirts on her, so she's clearly repellant to fleas!

Can I suggest taking a shower and washing your hair with a dog flea shampoo? If it's any comfort, it won't stay on you... usually they're off after a few bites.

Yes I showered straight away yesterday after I was bitten (didn't use flea shampoo though) and my clothes went straight in the wash. The flea shampoo is a good tip and I will definitely do this if I continue to be bitten.
