Mrs_B
I adore my girls, but sometimes my White Star called Atlanta drives me MAD There are days she screams and sounds like a strangled seagull - she often does this when it's near the time I normally go out to give them treats, so I am sure it's attention. But sometimes she doesn't let up and can go on all day. My poor neighbours!! They say they don't mind or 'don't notice' Atlanta is top chook and I don't want newbies coming along thinking it's OK to scream like a maniac! Tsk tsk! I just bought them some new wooden nest boxes for their WIR that arrived today to stop any egg laying squabbles, they are so spoilt...maybe too spoilt? Siiiigh! LOL! Ahhh you all know how I feel, right? x
Ziggy
They can be really noisy at times, can't they? I found with mines, that it's not consistant, so they can be more noisy for a week or two, then I hardly hear them... sometimes they sound as loud as the cavalry in the old western movies... If it happens in the daytime I wouldn't worry too much, there can be a bit of noise in a garden in the day... when mine started acting like hooligans early in the morning, I shut their cube door closed (the cube is in a WIR), so they couldn't come down to the run and pretend to be cockerels... Yes, we know what you mean... they're lovely, but sometimes you wish they had a volume control button on them...
Hayleybug
its funny though, because i was worried about the noise lola sometimes makes because it seems so loud to me, but our neighbour 2 doors down asked us whether we had got our chickens yet! so cant really be that bad then
PoachedPlease
Totally know what you mean. Mine make a fuss early in the morning and drivr me outside to tell them off! It's the fox though, it walks through garden every morning at the same time, and has a nose. The chickens go nuts, feathers everywhere and water feeder knocked over. I might as well have a cockerel at least he might square up to the cockerel. Xx Btw wouldn't a fox smilie be excellent!
Chortle Chook
The new nest boxes may help. My white silkie, Doodle, who is top chook makes a real racket when she feels there is not enough room for her to *think* about laying an egg. Trouble is, she thinks she needs an awful lot of room - like the whole nest box all to herself Mostly it is just her on her own claiming she needs a pent house suit, but sometimes, like today, she leads a complete chorus with one starting up after another. Normally we don't do a lot about this but today it got so bad that OH went out and gave them all a quick flash with the watering can. That stopped it. (Don't worry they did not get soaked or anything though it did give them a start).
charly1979
I know exactly how you feel Over the last week or so mine have been a nightmare squawking at all sorts, mainly the nest box Clarabel my 'Egg stalker' likes to follow anyone into the cube and sit and watch then she starts squawking which then starts who ever is laying off ! then we have the egg squawk with Clarabel also contributing to this ! If the neighbour is in his garden and dares to do any woodwork (drilling sawing etc) that starts them all off as does the strimmer ?? And they seem to know the mornings when I need a lie in as these are the days they find a way to wake me ! Last Sunday morning (the day I was off to Paris for training with work) they started at 5:30 ran out to them and let them out then spent 30 mins to check they wouldn't start again all was fine until 8:30 just as I was about to drop of they started again, annoyed was an understatement, I ended throwing them so treats to shut them up whilst telling them they were a bunch of bleeps and to shut the bleep bleep bleep BLEEP BLEEEEEEEEEEEEP up, little rat bags were still playing up at 11 . I spent all of Sunday PM in Paris worrying about them whilst I was away and it seems the ratbags were good for hubby however he was feeding them on mixed corn alone, he seemed to ignore the note re layers pellets ?? Needless to say when I got home I dashed out to see my darling ratbags and lavish them with more attention the hubby or kids As the title says Love my girls but .... the noise
heth1986
Tell me about it... I spent all day yesterday out in the glorious sunshine armed with a water pistol I felt rather mean but I keep telling Mrs Macaroni that if she upsets the neighbours then she will find herself at the farm up the road! good_egg
Oh dear. I rather thought my girls were quiet. They do recognise our car and start demanding out of the run when we get home but generally quiet otherwise... Perhaps having a house with 3ft stone walls helps... Might casually ask the neighbours! Chortle Chook
Aside from the egg laying space disputes, my chickens make a racket when there is something 'unusual' around. This could be a nearish neighbour with a strimmer (so more noise is made on hotter days as that is when strimmers seem to come out ) or a crow flying low overhead, or a cat they are not used to walking along the fence, or even a visitor calling on my direct neighbours. They really do seem to know who is who and quickly pick up on any 'strangers' around.
