Embilly
Hello, I have a relatively elderly exbat (we think she's not probably about 4 years old) who seems to have sour crop - again. Over the last 6 months she's has 2 bouts of sour crop. Both been treated by emptying her crop, and a 10 day course of thrush tablet. Both times she's been very quiet, sleepy, stopped laying, very very lethargic, lost weight etc, but made a full recovery including restarting laying. Today she seems fine in herself, and we have an egg, but her crop this morning felt large and quite squishy. I'm not sure if I should start treatment now, should take her to be looked at by a vet, or if there's a chance she can just 'live with it' without getting sick?? Any advice much appreciated,
The Dogmother
It sounds as if she might have some underlying issue that causes it to recur, what are you feeding her?
Embilly
Hi, I think she probably does, is put it down to being old? She's healthy in every way when she's good. Feed on layers pellets, plus free ranging (but no grass) And veges such as apple comes, spinach, etc. also have AVC in water etc. Has laid today but seeming quiet to me. The Dogmother
Too much fruit and veg won't help I'm afraid, cut all of those out for the time being and give her 2mls of neat ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar - the equine variety) twice a day for 3-4 days, then just add a splosh of it to the water on alternate days. If her crop looks to be getting better then you can re-start giving greens, but just a bit at the end of the day. This will work if it's caused by diet, or a tendency for her digestion to 'go alkaline' as my vet calls it.
Embilly
Thanks, I'll give that a go before restarting another round of meds. Should I empty her crop - or will the ACV work if it is still large?
The Dogmother
It works best if you can empty it first.
