newcountrygirl
Can some of you experienced omleteers advise me whether chickens can/will eat plums? We have a dearth of them - I have already made chutney and jam and plum frangipane tart and wondered whether my girlies would be okay to enjoy the occasional one. sjp
yes but not to many other wise they get 'runny poos' in fact they can eat most fruits other than citrus fruits
gavclojak
My girls would kill for grapes but not so keen on mango! Spoilt ladies
Tigiga
I only got my girls yesterday and they looked slightly confused by fruit initially. Did not seem particularly keen, but pecked at all the fruit, tried them with blueberries raspberries strawberries and apples; however they showed huge enthusiasm towards dandelion leaves and the leaves from my beetroot! Must try them with grapes next time I get some. I do have a mango in the fridge so might give them a try, ones the humans have had their share of course. redsunset
Bought a laden gooseberry bush last year when I only had 6 chooks. Mum tasted them a wk in but too tart (I had a plaster cast on so couldn't go look at the time)....fast fwd a month later, not a gooseberry to be seen. No need to ask who scoffed them.....along with all the nice lettuce's I had growing in barrels. Have 4 young plum trees so no fruit yet. They will not touch onions, chives or herbs. merlina
I thought my plum tree was on its way out after a very poor year last year This year I have made 20+ pots of jam and there's still loads on the tree! The girls FR in the garden and have been eating the windfalls - a useful service as it probably helps keep the wasps away Not seen any ill effects and they've been eating them for about a week

PoachedPlease
My chickens have an apple tree overhanging their run. They must get thru kilos of them. Meanwhile it's grape season too and they keeps hopping over the eglu netting and hunting out my vines.
