Matador to replace Garvo

Recommended Posts

I've used Matador for just over a year now the mob loves it and they look great to apart from the ones that are moulting at the moment it's cheaper than Garvo

Simon the importer will be at the National and the Fed and Matador are sending someone over to at least the National

Yes, Garvo is getting expensive.

I got mine from Rokers the other day and each bag was £13

I'm sure I didn't pay that last time I got some.

I had to pay just over £14 at Dobbies  .

Do you know what the pellet size is like on the Matador? As my girls like the smaller pellets of Garvo.

layers are about 3mm,mini/chick starter pellets are 2mm young hen/cockerel growers pellets are also about 3mm but I find that the chicks eat the 3mm ones at the moment I'm paying £10.50 for layers pellets but there is a possible price rise coming

I use Matador now, it's a good feed and as you would expect I only feed my show birds the best! I do prefer breeders or growers pellets though believing layers pellets to be overkill for most breeds as they were originally made for a commercial setting and I don't believe they have a place in your average back garden flock unless they are hybrids But that's a rant and I digress!

The pellets are quite small but I *think* they now do a mini layers pellet too

At the end of the day with the feeding of any bird or animal you get out what you put in, there is less filler in some feeds over others so the hens eat less (after the initial binge) and there is less poo and it's drier - my pet hens are fed a cheaper feed (still a good one) and the difference in cleaning out, consumption, egg quality and condition is obvious. Most layers pellets will do the job though, there is only one brand I wouldn't touch with a bargepole

As a quick follow up, I thought people might like to know that I've tried Matador layer's pellets now for several weeks and can say that my chooks are not only really well on it but they actually seem prefer it to Garvo. For a while I put Garvo in one Grub (purple one) and Matador in the other (pink one) and the contents of the pink Matador Grub has been going down much faster even though the purple Garvo Grub is in a location that my chooks normally prefer i.e. in the sheltered spot under the bamboo. I'll certainly be re-ordering it :D

You should swap the containers over just in case it is the pink container they like rather than the food

I've found that both Matador and Garvo can be got from Sturmans Seed Merchants- 0121 559 1175. If you give them a call rather than shopping online they are most helpful :D and the shipping charges are far less. Online the shipping charge for my order (over 20kg as I was ordering dove as well as chook food) looked like a wapping £28  but when I chatted on the phone it came down to £10.20

It can also be ordered from Newland Poultry but as they get it from Sturmans anyway might as well go direct :D
