Brain tumours and dogs - ETA confirmed bone cancer

Recommended Posts

We noticed a big lump on our rotties head about 10 days ago, it wasn't there at lunchtime when we went out but was there a few hours later when we got back, we assumed that he'd banged it on something.

It's still not gone down and on Thursday he was struggling to take his raw hide bone from me. Took him to the vets yesterday who has put him on antibiotics and he's going back on Tuesday. The hope is that it's some sort of abcess but she wasn't too optimistic and thinks it's more likely to be a tumour :( apparently they can 'appear' that quickly.

Anyone had any experience of this, it doesn't seem that if that is the case anything can be done :(

Big shock, he's 7 so getting on a bit for a rottie. We adopted him as a rescue when he was about 12-18 month, he's already been in and out of the dogs home twice by then. A few years ago his cruciate ligament went and he had to have a plate put in his leg. He's been through so much and turned into such an amazing dog he doesn't deserve this now :(

:? Brain tumours don't usually appear as a 'lump on the head' they grow beneath the skull out of sight and symptoms can be fits. Your dog may have a tumour but I am not sure about it being a brain tumour. I would have another word with your vets. It may be a tumour/cyst/abscess on his head that does not involve the brain at all.

Still waiting for results, although since the tests his bulging eye / nystagmus got worse, then slightly better and then today worse again. His jaw movement is very much restricted, lump very much still there. He's sleeping a lot but that's nothing that out of the ordinary when it's wet and cold, but in himself he's still him.

Not good news, bone cancer :( vet is going to give us pain killers for him but doesn't hold out much hope for more than 3 months, and we certainly don't want to see him suffering. It's already effecting his jaw, he can't yawn properly now, and his eye.
