blueandwhite
I have a child proof gate on my back door to stop the girls getting in the kitchen. Yesterday I was outside and as I shut the back door Storm got her beak stuck in between the gate and door. It happened in a flash and although I knew it was going to happen didn't have fast enough reflexes to stop the door shutting. She pulled away and I feared the worst. There was some blood so I took her inside as I knew the other two would go for her. I managed to get an antiseptic wipe on it and it seems there was a s"Ooops, word censored!"e at the very top of her beak where it joins her comb. So I kept her inside for the rest of the day and gave her some water in a tall jug so every time she had a drink it cleaned the wound. I popped her in the eglu when the others had gone to sleep. I was fully prepared to do the same today but when I opened the eglu door there was no blood just a dink. I think I've been really lucky - as has Storm - I could so easily have caused much more damage. I felt awful, I have had the same set up for 18 months and never considered this might happen. Have taken gate down and will have to think of Plan B for Summer!
Grandmashazzie
Oh my goodness Storm has been lucky. We have found a piece of fruit netting fixed to one side and then pegged to other with clothes peg enough to keep them out.Its not as handy as gate and it keeps getting tangled but it is cheap and they don't seem to like it at all so don't venture near it. Ain't Nobody Here
That was lucky . Don't blame yourself, they are so quick to move, you sometimes just can't react in time. I'm glad she is OK .
jackian
About two years ago one of my girls Eva trapped her leg in our back door and broke her leg. She in the end sadly had to be put to sleep as it was so bad. I felt so guilty especially when I mentioned to a neighbour that she had died and my Grand daughter piped up because I had killed her . I have had a child gate up ever since .
merlina
Ah - there are so many chances for this kind of stuff to happen. I think it's amazing the girls get away with so few injuries! Mine are always putting their feet under where my wellie-clad size 4s are about to land. The number of times I've tripped and stumbled to avoid them is just silly. A few weeks ago I did stand on Edna's poor foot. I feared it was broken as she limped away. It felt ok, but she was still limping so she came inside for a couple of days and perked up properly, so I guess I just bruised it. I did feel ever so guilty though
Luvachicken
I'm glad Storm was ok. Don't blame yourself. Things happen all to easily and the girls are so fast I'm surprised more of them aren't injured. I think the idea of a child safety gate is a good one - we no longer have ours though

Chickabee
You poor thing, you must have felt awful. They do have a habit of getting in the way, I've trodden on the exbats more times than I can remember (they like my garden shoes). Glad she's ok
