The Dogmother
Hi Chicks (and boys too, guess that i can't call you Cockrels!) Here's a warning that I got via our Neighbourhood watch ringmaster; regarding a security company with the word Direct in their name (can't repeat the full name) and purporting to be endorsed by the police. These people are cold calling in our area at the moment, mainly preying on the elderly. I understand that they are very persistant and are offering freebies too. They offer weblinks and seem very bone fide. The police tell me that they DO NOT endorse this company, and recommend that we do not buy from companies who cold call or post info through the door. You can contact the local crime prevention officer at your station for details of local companies that they recommend. Take care Clare
Lesley
Thanks for that Clare - it's only a short hop up the road from you to here If any of you have elderly relatives - have you made sure that they know how to use the door chain correctly? My Gran either used to leave it off "the postman will be popping in" or she used to keep it on all the time, in which case no-one could get in if there was an emergency. Only put the chain on when answering the door and check credentials first.
The Dogmother
I have talked to all the elderly ersidents in our road about that, in fact the NHW has supplied free door bars (like chains) to all 'vulnerable' residents. The thing is that they don't use them! There's an old lady up the road who we keep an eye on, and she will answer the door to anyone. I always call out to her that it's me at the door, but she is sooo deaf I don't think that she can hear! BLESS

Popcorn
My Mum was done by someone cold calling at her front door late at night. She had the chain on the front door, but the back door was unlocked and while she was telling front door guy that she wasn't interested, his side kick let himself in the back and stole her handbag Luckily, she doesn't keep cards or money in her handbag. That stays firmly round her neck in a little purse. So they only got make-up and perfume and other girly stuff. Still- - the cheek of it. The Dogmother
I hate to say it Gina, but distraction burglaries like that are very common now. I live in a street where people all leave their back doors unlocked or even open all the time. It would be nice if we could get away with doing that these days, but we can't and it is important to lock all doors and windows unless you are in sight of them. A neighbour was robbed downstairs when she'd just popped upstairs for tinkle! I suggest that everyone gets a 'no sellers, no advice' sticker free from their police station and sticks it on their porch/front door - not very pretty, but it sure cuts them short - either they just don't call, or yu can refer to the sticker and tell them to hop it!
