Normandy!

Recommended Posts

Woohooo!!!! We are going to Normandy in Ocober for my birthday - well actually coming home on my birthday, but I get a full day there as not sailing back until 5pm!!!! Got a whole week there - staying near to Honfleur which looks absolutely lovely. And has a Saturday farmers market, so lots of fresh produce. I am so excited!

Not looking forward to the 8 hour ferrie ride from Portsmouth to Le Havre. It's a night ferrie too - sailing at 11pm and arriving at 8am next day. Plus it's a long drive down to Portsmouth - but hubby doesn't mind. I'm also a bit scared of that bridge at Le HAvre. It looks terrifying!!!!!!!!!!

I've never been here before. Only ever been to Calais for the day & Paris for 6 weeks whilst travelling!

Has anyone else been round there and if so what delicacies are there? What is best to bring back apart from Wine? What sort of shops & things to do are there & what is the weather like in first half of October?

Thanks

Ooooh, lucky you! I've only been a couple of times, but it is beautiful! The ferry crossing is fine - loads to do on the ferry, but we slept, especially after the drive down! Have you booked a cabin? If not, it's well worth it - you're own private facilities for the night!

Oh what to buy in France? Definitely wine! Crepes, asparagus - jars of, ideal for the store cupboard and dead cheap, biscuits and some wonderful varieties of Lindt chocolate (look for the almond and apricot white chocolate - ). Calvados! Cider, and Breton Gateaux! I could go on - just have fun browsing the shops - even in the plain old supermarche the food is so different! 8)

Ooooooh! we've stayed in that area many times :D Don't forget the cheeses and cream 8) Pont l'Evecque cheese mmmmmmmmm.........

The bridge is fine - but you have to pay! There is the older bridge crossing, Tancarville, but you then have further to travel.

All the little cafes around le Bassin at Honfleur - the bit that is in all the photos - savoury crepes and Moules Frites.

Bayeaux is not far away - we've stayed in Bayeux many times. Their market is saturday morning. More crepes and a visit to the tapestry?

There is the Pere Magloire Calvados centre which has a museum as well, and you get to try the Calvados. I first went there with my sister one December, we were the only people there and we felt obliged to try the Calvados :? -at 10 in the morning :? - and I don't drink :?

There is a lot to see and do in the area - I'll look out some details for you. Our favourite drive is around the Suisse Normande route - well signposted.
