arowland17
I've been looking on here for treats as I've tried our 2 girls with cherry tomatoes, lettuce, green peppers, and raisins and they didn't like any of them! They don't mind broccoli and sweetcorn although it doesn't all get eaten straight away, but I tried them on a weetabix mixed into a sloppy soup with a bit of sunflower oil and warm water and they LOVED it!! it's about the only time they're quiet they both stand there eating it until the whole lot is gone and go crazy everytime they see their blue bowl which I put it in!! I'd like to try them on something different though as I'm sure it's better to alternate their treats and give them some variety - I'm doing a roast later so will have lots of potato peelings and carrot peelings do I just boil them up seperately and give them to them as they are, or should I give them in a bit of water like a soup?? any advice would be appreciated or any other ideas for treats that they may like! Laura & CTB
Just boil them seperately - I usually mash them up a bit mixed with a little olive oil. Have you had a look on the FAQ section? There is a chicken treats topic on there that might give you some ideas.
Muppet81
Must try the Weetabix treat. That is one I haven't tried. My girls adore lettuce - preferably a nice Iceberg which they play chicken football with whilst eating it.
arowland17
The weetabix one is also very good with my girls for getting them back in the run (usually impossible while free-ranging) but with the blue weetabix bowl in my hand it's a sprint to see who can get in the run 1st!! Ladylucan
I have just cooked mine aload of spaghetti, sometimes i mix different things with it or just give it plain, i use sweetcorn, lettuce, grapes., but today they have just got it plain, I still havent tried the weetabix yet, maybe tomorrow.... arowland17
does the spaghetti/pasta have to be wholemeal or is white ok or do they not care?? I may try that tomorrow, they're going to have potato peelings today, hope they like them, I'll put them in their weetabix bowl, I can imagine their disgusted faces if they don't like it as much as their normal treat! The Pearsons
And don't they run fast when they think there is food in the offing????
arowland17
lol I know, I've never seen anything like it!! if one of them goes back into the run and the other sees them pecking at something on the ground she dashes over and is there in seconds!! arowland17
The potato and carrot peelings cooked and mashed in a little olive oil weren't as well received as their usual Weetabix, but we left the bowl in the run and 1st they chucked the whole lot onto the floor but by evening the majority had been eaten and the last few peelings were polished off this morning so it was quite successful
BeckyBoo
you could try mealworms although they're expensive, ours like corn on the cob more than sweetcorn and they got ordinary white pasta yesterday that the kids didn't eat. They like the tops off strawberries once I cut them off, grapes, doritos (from a BBQ!) banan's (stolen from smallest boy) and melon skin, specially if there's a bit of the melon left on it! arowland17
brilliant thanks for all those ideas - I want to try them on lots of different treats sure it makes their days more interesting and mine too, it's so nice to see them enjoying thier treats! I don't know if I could stomach giving them mealworms though, saw them in the farm shop where we get our feed and hemcore and even though they were dead ones I couldn't even bring myself to pick up the pot and look at the price! Laura & CTB
Dried mealworms stink too !! I'm glad my two girls hate them.
chocchick
We actually just give the peelings raw. They like left over pasta too.
sam42
Ours adore potato peelings and new potatoes, grapes and mealworms. They really don't seem bothered by any greens but will keep trying.
arowland17
I had spaghetti hoops on toast for my lunch and gave them half a piece of toast (no butter) broken into bits with a bit of water added so not too hard, and a teaspoon of spaghetti rings ontop and they LOVED it!! went down much better than the veg peelings but I'm still going to keep on with the vegetables, must be good for them! chickencam
Mine are obviously healthy chooks they go mad for radish leaves and any leaves from any kind of cabbages. They do not like lettuce and thought we were mad when we gave them raisins as advised by the omlet delivery man!
arowland17
yes ours weren't impressed with raisins either, lots of beak wiping after trying those!
Laura & CTB
They do not like lettuce and thought we were mad when we gave them raisins as advised by the omlet delivery man! Yet mine adore lettuce and raisins especially when they are on the same plate Isn't it funny how they are all so different in their tastes. Ladylucan
I use just normal spaghetti, i break it into small pieces for them as they think they are worms.. but they mug me as sooon as i walk inthe run. As for giving the chickens a whole iceberg what a great idea, i normally cut it up into little bits, but will try that one, I still havent tried the weetabix but will do that right now. Ladylucan
mine also enjoy fresh maggots..... which i buy from the fishing tackle shop, thankfully i havent bought any lately, but as they enjoy them i do treat them very occasionally. arowland17
I just wouldn't be able to get maggots or mealworms let alone feed them to the chickens! I'm sure they'd love them as they love the slugs in our garden and there's a race if one finds itself into their run overnight, it's gone within seconds! I'm making the OH pasta this evening for dinner so am going to cook a little extra for the chicks for tomorrow's treat - sad I know but I've found myself buying things in the veg section of sainsburys when I do my weekly shop that I think they might like! Carol U
Ours love any kind of leftover cooked green veg - much better than raw - plus pasta or cooked potatoes if there are any around. I just mash them all up together. The only green thing they don't like is courgettes.
neal & ella
We have a wood pile in with ours which I turn over regularly and they go mad for the wood lice; it's like a flock of velociraptors.
The Bantam of the Opera
I like to feed my girlies anything leftover from my dinner they are certainly not picky having been rescued from a rather sad existance in a barn. They adore tinned spaghetti though. they go absolutely mad for it and when they see i've got some they dash over. I love watching them run, they look like theyre picking up their skirt as they run- they are so very elegant.
