Luvachicken
Today I had a lovely Granny Smiths apple. I shared it with the chickens and our rabbit. When I cut it up I was quite surprised to see inside a pip that was already growing. It had a main root and the leaves were still enclosed in the pip. I have planted it in a little pot and popped it somewhere sunny. Do any of you think it will grow ? I know it will take a very long time to produce apples but just wanted to give the little seed the benefit of the doubt.

I now the variety of the apple that my tree came from but I don't now the palliating one it could be one of at least 20 that the garden it came from grows yours I'd think has a good chance of been a cross of the same variety but there's no guarantee that the seedling will be good but it could turn out to be better that it's parent it just depends on what went into making a Granny Smith and which are the dominant genes
Luvachicken
Thanks sjp, I will nurture it as best I can. Maybe by the time I ever move to the countryside the apple tree might be ready to join some friends in an orchard
Valkyrie
Apples have such a big parentage that the new seedling may be nothing like - you might even get one good for cider! The only way to get an exact replica is by grafting. But you never know - it may be a super sweet variety.
Luvachicken
I don't mind what it grows into really. I was just very surprised to see it already growing inside the apple and had to give it a chance especially as it had escaped being sliced by the knife. I can just see its leaves poking through the soil

Luvachicken
Not sure where you are in Hampshire - but so am I (Hook) - I may come scrumping! Didn't you live in Odiham before ? I'm in Fleet. One of my best friends lives in Hook - next to a nature reserve looking out over fields and cows
Valkyrie
Nope, always Hook. But I've done lots of walks around Odiham. Jlo is just down the road from here. Ahhh Fleet, my swimming haunt. You've probably heard the yells of THAR SHE BLOWS!! coming from the pool. Must get my bottom down there again as I've slacked off again! Cooooool with the nature reserve though - ah Bartley Wood. With the Highland cattle. They nearly built on that - thank goodness they found rare gentians! Preserved forever. Think they have some New Forest ponies but I haven't seen them lately. Luvachicken
Valkyrie, if you go swimming in Fleet feel free to pop in for a cup of tea after Just a little update on the seedling - it died. It was doing really well and had even sprouted a tiny shoot with two teeny weeny true leaves but then we went on holiday. I left it in the care of my Mum and she didn't take notice of the instructions I left her. Oh well. I do however have 1, yes 1, cox's orange pippin apple growing on my proper tree (miniature) so maybe that will make up for it.
Valkyrie
Oh no that's a shame. But good luck with the little seedling! Ooooh after a swim - always feel tired afterwards - that would wake me up! LOL. Thank you that would be nice.
