Yet another eBay moan!

Why do people bid and win at the last minute, then not bother to pay for a few days??

 

I've sold a few things recently where the person has not paid for several days but actually won the item in the last few minutes of the auction. Is it possible that they have set up a snipe programme to do it for them, then forgotten?

 

It is really annoying as I don't have a local post office (have to walk a mile to mine :evil: ) so have to set my auctions to finish on certain days when I know I will be going near a post office the following day.

It's annoying isn't it. You could be right about the use of 'snipers' or maybe they're just not in a hurry for the item. Can you put something in your terms about posting it within so many days of payment, so even if they pay late you have some flexibility?

 

I bought something quite expensive (over £100) locally as it's a heavy item and I didn't want to pay postage. The vendor asked for payment by PayPal, which I did immediately and arranged to collect the item the following week. Last week - a month later - she contacted me saying it still showed as 'unpaid' and could I do anything. I assumed she was having trouble with her eBay account and said I thought that she'd have to do it from her end. This week, she opened an 'unpaid item' dispute - it now turns out she's never received the money even though it left my account on time! I think she hasn't used PayPal before and didn't know how to retrieve it.

 

I'm about to put a cheque in the post, but I'm amazed that she allowed me to take this item without having checked she had the money. :roll:

I get that too Claire; I have a clause in my terms that they need to pay within 48 hours of winning the auction, as I got fed up with non-payers. I give them an extra day's grace, and message them, then open a dispute to get the item fees refunded so I can list it again.

 

The latest one also asked lots of questions before winning the item :roll:

To be honest I do OK on ebay, sold loads but not had many problems but...

Last week I brought a buy it now item with free postage but paid the £6.95 extra postage for next day delivery, I received the item about four days later with a 2nd class post label on it.....tried to email the seller, but no reply. I have opened a case for a refund of the additional postage.....

That's worrying! Do you think she is a new seller and Paypal are withholding funds until she has proved herself to be proficient. I understand they do this now and hold on to money for up to 21 days.

Ask her to check the Paypal Email address in the listing, as she may have typed it in incorrectly. I'm a very experienced seller, and I did that once.

The unpaid item dispute would have opened automatically when she contacted you.

Just respond with the date you made the PayPal payment, the reference if you have it & it should be fine.

If the worse comes to the worse & it escalates, then eBay will intervene & see that your payment has indeed been made.

 

They are VERY on top of this sort of thing because sometimes people go & pay cash & the seller asks them to cancel the transaction, so they don't have the fee to pay.

It COULD be that your seller has marked the item as not paid herself, either by mistake or to try & wriggle out of fees, although that would be a bit daft if the payment is easily traceable, as a Paypal payment is!.

I suspect it's what Charlotte suggested above - she is new to PayPal.

 

It's now been cancelled in PayPal, and I promised to send a cheque, only of course now I can't find the chequebook, which I hardly ever use these days. Going to have to email her and ask for bank details, or she can have cash next week because although it's only a few miles away the chances of me getting over there this weekend are zero.

 

She's actually been very nice about it (considering it's not my fault, so she should be!) so I want to sort it out.
