Chickendoodle
I thought it would be fitting in this centenary year to have a place to remember our ancestors who died in WW1. My great Grandfather. Herbert James. Northamptonshire Regiment Died 1st October 1914 from shrapnel wounds sustained in the Battle of the Aisne sometime before 27th September His widow was left with 3 children under 4 and another baby was born shortly after his death. She never re-married. My sister remembers her but I was only 3 when she died
soapdragon
My maternal grandfather, Leslie Brooker, lost a leg at Gallipoli fighting with the ANZACs and, tho he survived the war, this the experience scarred him for the rest of his life. I never knew him as he died about two months after I was born at the end of 1964. We are currently keepers of a 'Widow's Penny' for a member of OH's family - these are large bronze coloured 'medals'issued to the families of those killed. They have the name and regiment engraved on them.

patsylabrador
I'm very bad at remembering details but I had a great uncle who was in the war. I think his name was Thomas Bone. He was a private and on his first time in France he lost a finger and got infected and he died. We tracked down his grave at Tottenham cemetery and found he had been moved to the small military plot there which feels nice to think he's with buddies. It seems such a sad little tale, just a poor lad from a poor family in Hackney. My great-grandfather was in the artillery, he survived but his horses died. I think about the poor, scared horses. This thread is such a lovely idea and thank you. Aged 16 Egluntyne, that is so sad.
kissinuk
Here's great great uncle Giuseppe Pacitti, died in the war at the age of 20. My sister found this awesome photo of him along with some of his mum & his sister (my grandads mum). The newspaper clip I've added to the bottom mentions his father was "Cosimo Pacitti", this was also my grandads name.
