Does anyone watermark their photos?

Recommended Posts

I've come across a couple of my photos from my blog on pinterest and other sites, and thankfully, they have a link back to where they came from. However, I have heard of people stealing images and passing them off as their own, so was wondering about watermarking. I now use facebook, and notice that it strips all the metadata from photos, so am cautious about what I put on there. I have no problem with people sharing my images but I don't want them stolen.

Just wondering if others have thought of watermarking their images and if anyone has a recommendation for a good watermarking site?

You can watermark your photo's in programs like photoshop, but probably also on sites. Don't know about that last bit, because I don't bother with watermarks. I think it's too much of a hassle and I just don't publicly share photo's which I think are likely to be stolen.

I have, but not often. Most of my photos are un-watermarked, mostly because I'm too lazy to watermark them.

When I do watermark I use a free program called gimp. It's a very powerful graphics program, so not the easiest program for a beginner to use, but there are some tutorials on the web that might help.

There are also quite a on-line tools that might be easier to use, but I've never tried them myself.

I've actually had someone on ebay use my photos, you wouldn't think someone would want to pass off a photo of your shoes as their own, but they did!

I did that once.

Some 13 I years ago bought an expensive dress on Ebay. It didn't fit, so I listed it immediately. I used the original photos, as I didn't have any way of displaying the dress properly. The original seller complained to Ebay and my listing was removed without notice.

I then realised that it wasn't the done thing, and that at the very least I should have asked the seller's permission first. It honestly didn't occur to me that there would be a problem, I wasn't doing it to be dishonest. Nowadays, it's obvious that it was wrong - but back then, the whole Ebay thing in the UK was still very new.

I think the thing about ebay is, they let you do it without telling you that you can't! If you see something similar to what you want to sell, you just click "sell similar" and it is up to you to remove the photos and change the listing detail. If you don't then the original listing becomes yours, with no warning that you have done something wrong.

A few years ago I listed a cat flap for sale. Then, whilst browsing ebay to see what other cat flaps were listed, just to see, I thought the photos on to particular listing were rather familiar. I clicked on the item and lo and behold there was my cat flap photos, which I had taken on my dining table, with the very same scratch! I contacted the person and told them to remove the photos as they were mine and it was against ebay rules. Thankfully they didn't realise and removed them and did their own photos. But how cheeky!

As for watermarking - I haven't done it yet, but it is something I have thought about with selling my crochet items on Folksy. There are a few crafty people on Facebook who do things like paper cutting pictures and they have had people take their images and pass them off as their own work. I think when you have put your heart and soul into creating something, I think you should protect your work. I have no problem with people trying to make their own version on my items, whereas these paper cutting people do have a problem. I see it as a form of flattery.

I don't really need to watermark any of my photos, but The Boy does it all the time for his work images, and those on his website are marked.

As for ebay; I bought some boots from a lovely lady, then noticed an identical listing with same text and photos, but different user name. I contacted 'my' seller and alerted her to it; she had the listing taken down.

I discovered the other day that one of my photos from my blog, of one of my pieces of painted glass, has been 'pinned' on Pinterest. I'm quite happy that someone has liked it enough to pin it, but I only discovered it because it showed on my blog stats that someone had arrived at my blog from Pinterest. Would be nice to get some sort of notification to tell you that someone has pinned your photo
