Avian influenza- now in UK

Recommended Posts

So long as you take reasonable precautions, and don't visit any avian farms or wild bird sanctuaries, you will be fine. It is mainly spread in large factory farming situations where the birds are stressed, and their resistance is low. It's very hard for humans to catch the mutated form, and it only really starts off in countries where humans live in very close proximity to their fowl.

So another case of the flu on a poultry farm and again three days of keeping my chickens shut in (technically that is...).

I feel for the farmers (and of course for the chickens).

A recent program on the telly showed that egg farmers lose a cent on every egg every day... They don't even get the cost price for the eggs from the big supermarket chains.

A farmer was explaining he was loosing about €400 000 annually! :?

So three more cases today. All three in the same town, but much much further way from me.

Does mean another 72 hours of lock down... I'm now considering actually keeping the ladies in the run and putting up the heavy duty tarp. Might also get rid of any wild bird food in my garden to limit visitors. (coop is currently under a tree)

I think I'll just inform my direct neighbours and apologise for any noise.
