My friend got a purple GO up and 4 new little girls last Saturday and she phoned me this afternoon to say that she just got her first egg today.

 

Obviously I am very happy for her but very envious too.

So not fair.

 

Please egg fairy, come to me

It's strange but this is the 1st year that mine have laid in the winter - one started on Christmas Eve and now they're all at it. Getting 4 eggs a day, which is unheard-of for my lot!! Might it be that they're in a bigger flock and feel more secure? Or is it that they prefer their new Go-Ups? It's been a relatively mild winter, but so was last year and we didn't get any eggs then until late Feb. I know that the amount of light is supposed to be the relevant thing, but no change there either.

However, yes Cat tails, the downside is that they'll probably all be broody all summer!

it's not been milder than last year, it's been colder since about boxing day.and it's been lighter than last year mainly due to the fact that it's been a lot drier that last year we had over a month of rain at the start of last winter and heavy dense cloud for most of the time. you need light to make eggs

Cinnamon is such a devoted squatter! She sometimes doesn't really know when to stop and will do a funny sort waddle around my feet...

 

Squatting chickens makes life so much easier though! Catching a chicken is a doddle!
