Jules.
Daft question- i really would like to make some of this crab apple jelly. my neighbours have given me lots of red apples which are really sharp & sour- are these crab apples? Also- can I make this using baking apples as my parents garden backs onto an orchard (which has geese in it since before i was born- but obviously not the same geese ) & I have had loads of baking apples given to me
Louise
Small sharp apples red or green and red/green are crab apples mind you I had some quite large ones on my tree last year but they are so sharp Don't know about cooking apples but I don't see why not
Lesley
Cooking apples would make a decent jelly I think.

The Dogmother
Crab apple and clove jelly is divine, either just on toast or with cold meat like pork
Snowy
That's reminded me I need to go buy a jelly bag. My crab apples are only just beginning to turn orange But there's some nice elderberry bushes in the fields at the back.
Cinnamon
That's reminded me I need to go buy a jelly bag. I bought one especially, but then couldn't find it when it came to me making the jelly I ended up rigging up a sort of bag type thing with a new Muslin cloth I had hanging around. It didn't look vert pretty, but it worked
Lesley
Lakeland keep running out. They didn't have any last Saturday but did have them on Wednesday - they don't have any of the stands in at the Stratford branch though. I'm going to have to remove all the dog hair from the feet of the tall stool I don't usually make clear jellies - I puree/sieve the fruit and amke more of a fruit cheese with it. I still have plenty from last year so I'm going to make a clear one. Our crab apples are only just ready as well Snowy.
The Dogmother
I love clear jellies. Lesley, Abraxas in Banbury had net stands when I went in there last weekend. I have the same problem with cat hair on the bottoms of the dining rom chairs!

Jules.
well, it is on the stove simmering away now. It started to boil over (I only just about managed to get it all into my biggest pan) It was only then that I decided to divide it between two pans If I had a brain.....etc

Jules.
Oh, I like the hammock effect! My jelly may go a bit cloudy, as I ended up squeezing the pillow case by mistake as I tried to knot it to hang it up. How many jars did you make in the end, Cinammon? The Dogmother
My jelly bag set-up is exactly the same as Christian's. I speed it up slightly by pressing the mixture through a steel sieve frist to get the worst of the bits out, then straining the remaining liquid and few bits through the net - much faster and the same end result.
