Let's talk triathlons

Anyone done any?

I have signed up for an entry level one in July (13 weeks).

It's a shorter sprint distance - 400m swim (in a pool  ), 17km cycle and 3km run.

The cycling and swimming is no issue. My typical cycling run is usually around that (did 19km today) and my typical swim is twice that distance if not three times. It's the run I will struggle with.

I can't run for toffee  I have downloaded "couch to 5k" thinking if I can build that into my training schedule that I should be able to run the whole 3k (although someone I know who did it last year walked the 3k, didn't come last and wasn't the only one  )

Any training tips or words of encouragement would be very welcome :D

You need to speak to Rosie, Debs - she's our Triathlon champ!

Her strong areas are the swimming and running (she still holds the girls under 16s 1,500m record for Oxfordshire, and she made that 2 years ago) The hardest part are the 'transitions' between each stage, so it is crucial to practice and to set up your bike, kit and trainers properly. There are YouTube videos, which are very helpful, but at the end of the day it's down to practicing it.

Triathlon suits are a must (and VERY unflattering!!!) and aren't too expensive, and you can buy belts (to hold your competitor number securely) cheaply on the internet - these are put on as you transition from pool to bike.

One more tip is to find a club near you and join them for the training sessions as technique is very helpful if you decide to take it seriously. Madam does one of these per week, and a 3-4 mile run every day.... her mantra is that if she doesn't fancy it, or stops enjoying it, then she will stop competing. Having said that, she once ran so hard that she made herself sick... but earned the respect of the other competitors and really enjoyed the race :shock: it's hard to watch as a mum when your child is pushing themselves that hard.

Far to much for me nowadays, I did do the Bruggen 10 Mile marathon once in 1986 when I was stationed in Germany. Me and my mate trained up for the event and were quite confident. Arrived at Bruggen and had a pre run beer in the Malcomb club (we took it seriously honest). Got to the start and there were loads of entrants so me and my mate got split up, bang goes the gun and we were off, I was going well but thinking that Dave was going like the clappers so I kept the pace up, at the 3 mile mark another friend who was a proper marathon man came past me I managed to ask him if he had seen Dave, "Miles back" was the reply  soon after my right leg started to hurt badly, I hobbled to the end and got my medal but in the end I had a stress fracture of my fibula.:cry:

Six weeks in a pot, I was not confident it was fixed because it was one of these walking type casts and my leg was still sore, whatever it was removed on the Friday and that night I tripped up coming out of the bar and ended up in a pot again for another 6 weeks. I gave up running after that :oops:

Good luck Space Chick I'm sure you will do well :D:D

I have now completed my first two runs... Yesterday morning and this morning.

The route is 2.7km and I'm doing a mix of running and walking as per C25K, I did it in 28.5mins yesterday and 27mins today :D

It was hard both mornings, but with time I will get there I am sure. I'm thinking I will do the same route next week and then maybe look at increasing it. The only issue is everywhere is hilly around me!! My fit bit thinks I've walked up 25 flights of stairs during my run

The actual triathlon run is 3k, so even if I could do that in 30mins it wouldn't be too bad, although I'm hoping that I will get better over the next 12 weeks.

Back to cycling tomorrow and Friday :D

Thanks Allison :D

I've had to take a week off training due to Shingles, but I have really rested and so I am hoping to get back to light training on the weekend.

It's getting quite scary now, only 30 days to go!

Before I came down with shingles I was training to try and get the best time I could. Now, with this set back, my training will be focused on making sure I get around the course! I'm sure I will, I have done enough training up to now to ensure that.

Never mind, I can try for a better time at my next triathlon in October, I have already signed up

Also I have joined my local triathlon club who are really supportive and helpful :D
