Our little drunken emo chick has now gone on a big exploration in the afterlife. She was having baytril, but in fairly good health apart from that and still running around and digging like no tomorrow. So she was 6 years old - almost. Just another month or so. But at least she went gently, she went in her sleep peacefully it appears.

A gentle departure after a long and happy life of being loved is all any chicken could hope for.

Thank you. Was looking up and we hatched her in April, so very close to her birthday. I suppose she was fertilized in March!

She was obviously well loved to live to such an age.

We still have the ratbag "sister" of hers. Couldn't have been the other way round could it!!! We still have the pekin that'll be 7 in early June too! We are now down to the last of our chicks and Egg Lou's first babes (pekin). Then the 2 newbies we got last January. But we are dwindling them down so that moving house will be easier and wear and tear on the garden will be less. Mercenary me. But moving means more hens and possibly ducks. Nah, hubby wants a pond - definitely ducks!

6 years - a very impressive innings! Glad to hear she went peacefully, always hard to lose them.

Thank you. The others are enjoying more room in the dust bath though! Was looking at the scar on my arm that one of my first birds left - it was a huge 13" gash but now only 2" noticeable. I laughed to myself and thought oh dear Sioux - gone but never forgotten!!!!

Thanks Lewis. It happens doesn't it - never get used to losing the originals do you. Always a plus though - today the new (well young) maran actually took food from my hand. It's only been a year!
