AndyRoo
Hello all, Does anyone know where in the Bristol area we might find some Easter Egger hens for sale? We've decided to start with 3-4 hens and while these are primarily for pets, lots of eggs would be great. We wanted to get a mix of egg colours - and naturally the niece and nephew have suggested some brightly coloured eggs too. Does anyone know if there is anywhere around the Bristol area that sells any Easter Egger hens - which I understand lay blue and green eggs. I tried Googling, but I didn't have much luck! Thanks, Andy
sjp
Easter eggers don't technically exist in the UK but there are one or 2 people that have breed their own versions of them and there are a few hybrids that lay blue and green eggs and shades of blue and green plus a couple of pure breeds Cream Legbar been one
AndyRoo
Ah, ok. I think I found somewhere that sells Cream Legbar, so I will look at getting one of those. Thank you!
Olly
You'll surely find some but as sjp has said, they're not known as Easter Eggers over here. My blue egg layers were sold as 'Skyline' I seem to recall. Can't help with a supplier as I'm nowhere near you, but if you just search for 'hybrid hens for sale' in your area and then look at what the different sellers have available, you'll find some options. AndyRoo
Thanks again. Do these hybrids only lay blue eggs? Which breeds lay green eggs? Or is it luck of the draw? I quite like the idea of green and blue eggs myself. Cheers
sjp
it can be a bit luck of the draw I think I've not had a blue egg hybrid for a few years and then it was an 80% chance of a blue egg mine was one of the 20% that laid a pastel colour
Olly
You don't really know till they start laying - I have two identical (outwardly) Skyline hens, one lays a pale blue egg and the other lays a distinctly khaki coloured egg. I believe they can range through olive green to blue to a buff colour. That's part of the fun!
AndyRoo
Okey dokey. Thanks guys. The niece read about blue, green and pink eggs and got very excited!
Chickabee
The columbine is a nice bird too. Bit less skittish than a cream Legbar. It's a hybrid, but a nice big fluffy bird
Lewis
Yep, Easter Eggers is a purely American term for an Araucana cross. I have a friend near Bristol who sells the Hillcrest Blue which is a Cream Legbar hybrid, as well as pure Cream Legbar and Araucana Bantams which all lay blue and green eggs as well as lots of other poultry. She is Charlotte's Poultry in Upper Wraxall. We've also had birds from Moon Ridge Farm who are in Exeter and have a great reputation. AndyRoo
That's great, thanks everyone. We've actually been looking at Charlotte's Poultry and somewhere called Nibley Farm online. It looks like they both do some Legbar hybrids, so I think I'll probably just have to pick one of them and get them all from the same place. Now I just have to choose some to keep the little darlings quiet when they come to visit.
SeramaSilly
Or you could get a pure breed araucana which is the bird they all originate from. I used to have an unknown breed crossed with an araucana, they always have really great hairdo's, she was my cheekiest girl, could fly really well and used to go and visit my neighbours! :-0 She used to lay quite well and never got broody. x
AndyRoo
I did think about that - but I couldn't seem to find any close to where we are going to be living!
