Joojoo
Hi I saw it on the BBC news website earlier. I know I would do exactly the same for any of my animals if I could afford to. I hope I never have to think about it as I would hate to cry in front of my bank manager This is the story if anyone wants to read it http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/6960334.stm Jue
Ladylucan
I know that you can get pet insurance for dogs and cats etc, but is there such a thing for chickens?,
Guest
In theDaily Mail the alleged cost was £2100 with the couple having to take out a bank loan - taking a year to pay it off - and having to be frugal to do so - and no holiday. The chicken is suffering from depression - from having the amputation - but having a lone chicken would make it depressed too I would have thought. It lives indoors (allegedly) with its own cushion - and gets to freerange outside in the garden when they are at home. I will probably be lynched for saying this on here - but I would have made the decision that if it was trapped in barbed wire and seriously hurt I would have it put out of its misery right away, rather than put it through all the treatments and then the amputation. I would like to think that I would not have had any dangerous wire for it or any animal or human to get entangled in. In fact I know that I would never have - but if I did I would no doubt feel incredibly guilty. At least it is getting a new lease of life. Minky
I posted this story yesterday lunchtime, but it vanished off the board! I've gotta say, I feel abit sorry for the wee hen: "Lily was also diagnosed with depression but has now recovered, said Mrs Mills. The chicken's gloominess was thought to have been brought on by being in the house alone while Mrs Mills and her husband Sam were out at work" Now I'm not pet psychologist, but I would say the chicken was MORE depressed about having one of it's two legs removed and being rendered housebound, I can see the sense in a four legged animal having an amputation for it's own good, but not so sure if this is in the hen's best interests. Egluntyne
I posted this story yesterday lunchtime, but it vanished off the board!. Probably because I had already posted it as One Legged Chicken. We looked into chicken insurance a while back. An company that specialises in insuring exotic birds were the only ones who would do it. Commercial chicken owners don't insure individual birds...they wring their necks...it is not economically viable for them to do otherwise. Just an observation there. The cost was outrageous...over £300 per year premium per bird! Most of us decided to take our chances. I've got 8 hens...my premiums would be nearly two and a half grand. Much as I love my girls.....there is no way I would be racking that sort of figure up in vets bills in a year! Common sense has to prevail sometimes. I dare say that as hen keeping becomes much more the norm, the insurers may revisit it and come up with something more realistic.

Minky
Well, this is the thing - pop the little girl into a nice safe fox proof eglu and they won't have to keep her cooped up inthe house watching Jeremy Kyle!

Minky
Same here - I thought I'd checked, but I missed it I was more worried that I'd somehow accidentally been offensive in my post and that's why it was modded - unknowingly developed typists tourettes or summat!! cutechicky
Thats a lot to pay for a leg! You can get them freshly cut off from the butchers for free! (even though there is a big difference between it being being done in the butchers/operated off! ) A big price difference. But I suppose if she loves it that much it is well worth it. I know I would do the same for mine if I could afford it! I couldn't imagine being without my girlies Even though I havn't had them long, it would surely take me a long time to get over them! AJuff
I know what my OH would have done in that situation. He definately wouldn't have paid that amount. A new cube and a new flock of hens would have been his suggestion.
