dancing cloud
Now I freely admit I'm not up to date on modern etiquette, but an invite to a leaving do that sets out an amount per head to be paid up front to attend, just seems wrong. Wrong . The person leaving was very high-up in the organisation and could almost certainly afford a sausage roll or two. If he really could not afford to feed everyone, invite fewer people! Is it just me? Am I simply behind the times? You can tell me the truth, I trust you In case you had any doubts, I have regretfully declined the gracious (not) invitation. Leicester_H
I agree with you. If it was a 'lowly' worker, I might expect peers to pull together to put on a leaving do but I would never expect to be asked for money by the person leaving. soapdragon
B***dy cheek I can imagine a group of friendly colleagues getting together for a meal to 'see someone off' in a casual evening out sort of way and have been to similar where you are, of course, expected to pay your way. But to be invited and told you will have to pay....I wouldn't cough up...I'd splutter.
Willow
Wow I'd have declined as well, I've been to informal leaving dos at nearest pub where everyone pays their own way but then it's been up to us how much we spend. To my surprise when I left my last contract my colleagues wanted to go to the pub for lunch for my leaving do and we all paid for our own lunch and drink. I'm hoping the reason they wanted a leaving do was they were sad to see me go, come to think of it maybe it was a celebration
mullethunter
I think that's disgusting. Would definitely say no.

chooksRCute
cheeky Blighter! when you choose to leave you should be grateful that some are sorry to see you go and wish to send you off with a token of their time and if you're lucky a bunch of flowers
Olly
No. When I left my job last year I organised drinks - luckily someone else was leaving at the same time as me, so we shared our drinks do - and WE paid the bill, it was quite a lot but I'd been there 17 years and it was expected etiquette. As someone said above, if it was a case of all going out for a meal together then I'd expect to pay my way but I definitely wouldn't expect to shell out for a leaving 'do' - especially being asked up front! I expect that makes the decision about whether to go or not quite easy .... Are you expected to contribute to a leaving present, too?
