SeramaSilly
I was just wondering whether the banties are noisy as the sussex large fowl do seem to have a reputation for being very loud?!
Daphne
LF Sussex hens are not noisy, at least no noisier than other breeds. LF cockerals on the other hand are very loud, due to their huge size. On that basis, bantam hens should be a doddle to keep
Charlottechicken
I have a light Sussex bantie, Maisie (my avatar). She's not particularly noisy. She is completely bonkers though, attacks feet and thinks she's a cockerel so we do get some strained crowing attempts off her. She has never laid a proper egg, and is broody half the time too! SeramaSilly
I've read countless posts with people complaining about the noise their sussex make but I suppose as always it depends on the individual bird - my L/F australorp could make a terrific noise and my pekin used to sound like a strangled seagull What's your bantie araucana like Claire - is she a quiet lady? x
Charlottechicken
Ahh, no. Lola is quite loud. She is very spoilt and demanding, and will shout to be let out when she hears the car draw up. She has quite a screech on her and I've heard people shush her when they walk past! (Our garden is side on to the road, although we have a high fence). Sometimes Maisie does join in and make a noise with Lola but she never usually instigates it.
mullethunter
Oh dear Hopefully that's an individual trait rather than a breed one!
Charlottechicken
Unfortunately for me I think it is individual to my bantam Araucana! I spoke to her when she was hatching and ever since she has shouted loudly at me, a bit like English speaking folk do abroad to make themselves understood, I think she believes I will understand her if she squawks loud enough! Sometimes she shouts until she is blue in the face and ho"Ooops, word censored!", she is a spoiled madam. Having said all that she is an adorable little hen and I feel very lucky to have her, we have some lovely snuggles and she is like a shadow sometimes, following me around, and trying to get through closed windows to be with me. Getting back to light Sussex though, I would be put off having another one because of the broodiness and lack of eggs, which is frustrating. The Dogmother
Hi Sophie, I don't think that breeds necessarily have certain breed-specific traits. I have two reverse sussex banties (Silver Sussex) identical to look at, but each very different personalities and noise levels. The most noisy of my lot is a tie between a pekin and a black German Langshan bantam
SeramaSilly
Thanks Clare - it would have to have pekin in it - I couldn't believe the earth -shattering noise that came out of my little pekin!! x
The Dogmother
I had one, which thought it was a seagull, shrieking at the top of its voice... she lived for 11 years Meant to confess that I ended up with 2 Blue Angels at the weekend they were so well behaved on the course that I took them home afterwards! Oh well, they can't get hold of them through the winter, so it might be my last chance this year.
SeramaSilly
11 years - that's brilliant!! That must have been one of the one's that I saw when I came to your house 10 years ago then!! x
mullethunter
Meant to confess that I ended up with 2 Blue Angels at the weekend They sound like lovely chooks DM. You'll have to post us a picture My new girls seem to be settling in OK. They both took themselves to bed in the Go this evening. The red-brown one is much the friendlier of the two so far but she is quite noisy
