The Dogmother
Geese are more likely carriers - they migrate further, so will stop in more countries en route
Luvachicken
Won't be going to feed the birds at the local pond for a long while then. We have loads of geese there.
Cat tails
That's the only true precaution I have taken too. Been avoiding the big lake close to my house.
Luvachicken
I never even gave it a thought. We often take our Christmas left overs for the wildfowl - always next year ....
sjp
Geese are more likely carriers - they migrate further, so will stop in more countries en route how about swans the Bewick's swan it migrates from Russia about 7500 miles if the BBC news report from last Monday is right they were expected in Gloucestershire over the weekend just gone

The Dogmother
Heard this today: " I haven't bothered to keep mine in the run, I am always out in the garden and can keep an eye on them to make sure they are safe" Does she honestly think that the virus is like a big, 6ft fungus the bogeyman, which she can see? WitchHazel
Clare, I know it isn't funny...but that really made me laugh. Silly woman.
The Dogmother
I have to admit that I laughed at first. TBH, I am running out of calm, reasoned answers for this sort of idiocy.
sjp
DEFRA has put a temporary ban on poultry shows and auctions 2 days after a major poultry show why now and not last week ? there's only 2 shows between now and the possible end of the current order the one is on the day. auctions I can understand but I suspect the last ones of the year have been held but again why not last week? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-38376394
The Dogmother
Personally, I was surprised that they didn't stop movements when the prevention zone went up.It does help to prevent the spread when the disease is already around, but who's to know that it isn't? sjp
I expected the Fed to be cancelled once we'd had the news about the infected farm
The Dogmother
Me too. All very odd, whilst wildfowl are the main spreaders of the virus, transporting birds all over the country can't be a good idea It's going to spread anyhow, but the least we can do is help to prevent it by taking all necessary measures. Goldie
Couldn't believe the Fed show went ahead at the weekend. Whilst we all can't let 2+ chickens roam in the garden, 7000 poultry can convene from all corners of the UK...it beggars belief! They've stopped it now https://www.gov.uk/government/news/poultry-gatherings-suspended-following-avian-flu-case but it seems a bit horse/door/bolted to me.... sjp
I assume that DEFRA had inspectors or reps at the show and either did like something or didn't realise/understand the size of the show and the catchment area of the entrants or the mechanics of a poultry/bird show
