sour crop - how long without food?

Recommended Posts

Our elderly exbat appears to have sour crop. Found her looking miserable this afternoon with a huge crop. As I picked her up to check her over I was hit with a lovely stream of brown, smelling liquid - went right down the back of my leg and into my welly :vom: I emptied her (very carefully) and she perked up noticeably so I stuck her in a broody cage with water with acv in (tried to syringe neat acv into her but she wasn't feeling ill enough for me to manage it safely on my own). I'll stick her back with the others once it's dark and then keep her separate again tomorrow so I can check her crop and limit her food. Should I let her have a small amount of pellets tomorrow or keep her on water only (with poultry tonic or more acv?). Thanks.

I seem to remember I was told 48 but didn't have the heart to do it. Make sure you stick to just small amounts of pellets afterwards. And then something like Beryl's bacteria to get the culture back to normal can be a good idea.

Some will recommend yoghurt, but Lewis has told us chickens can't digest lactose so that's not a good idea.

How's she getting on?

As you said she has a huge crop I was going to ask if it could be compacted but as it felt empty hopefully that's not the case.

I'd restrict food for a day or two and would use something like Daktarin or Nystatin which are antifungal; I know some people use Vanodine V18 which is a disinfectant/germicide.

Yeah I always cringe a little when I see people feeding yoghurt, obviously they cope with it and probably 'just' causes diarrhea in healthy chickens but it can make fungal infections (sour crop) much worse.

Our chickens have pellets 99% of the time and very occasional treats and very rarely (if never - touch wood!) have crop problems.

Thanks Lewis and Mullethunter. She was certainly a chicken who made the most of her freedom :). We're going to make a special cake using her last 3 eggs tomorrow (she was still laying regularly). It's going to be strange letting the big ones out tomorrow - Hildebrand was always first out and last to bed.
