POL now or cute chicks later ?

Recommended Posts

Where I'm going to get my new girls from, has just told me she has POL Pekins ready now or chicks that are going to hatch in a couple of weeks time, that I would then wait for them to be about 6 weeks old.

I've asked her what colour POL she has and am waiting for her to get back to me.

This might help me decide what I want to do.

Part of me would like to get some soon and another part of me would like to wait for the cute chick stage where they start to find their little voices.

I also have quite a lot of growers pellets left that mine have been eating over the winter and the younger chicks would be able to eat those up.

I'm never very good at decisions.

I've had POL before and I've had chicks before.

What would you do ?

Me, I would have POL. Just because I am impatient. Would the chicks be sexed? I took 2 biggish chicks, the little peepers we called them. They were cute but one is a boy,so I would be afraid to get another boy. Thankfully we have had no complaints yet. We have just got new neighbours so we shall see if he gets another summer.

It will be down to your facilities Luvachicken. Chicks will need to be kept separate from the main flock until POL and then introduced carefully. New POL will need to be quarantined for two weeks anyway. We don't feed layers pellets until the first egg arrives, so you could use up the growers whilst the new POL's are separated.

Thank you everyone for replies.

I am lucky that I have a spare Eglu Go and I can separate my run in half :D

This is thanks to 2 very spiteful girls, I had a long while ago, who had to be separated from the others because of their behaviour.

I'm thinking I will wait for the younger chicks.

Mind you the lady hasn't got back to me about the colours of the older ones yet ......

I would wait for the youngsters. Mainly because my two that I had at ten weeks (I know that's a bit older than yours will be) are so much friendlier than the other 4

That's a good point :D

My Gemma is the most friendly of the 3 I have left and I had her from about 6 weeks old.

It also gives the weather a chance to be a bit nicer by then.

I WILL wait
