Who wants to sew a foundation pieced chicken

Recommended Posts

I'm going to share how to make a foundation pieced chicken with you. It'll be a few days while I draft it properly, write up instructions and sew a sample (or I may share it as I go along). So you can get bits ready.

Anyone can join in. You don't need any patchwork experience I'll explain it as we go. We're going to sew straight lines in running stitch or use the machine.

What you need to make your chicken.

- S"Ooops, word censored!"s, 1 colour for the head and neck and wing (could be different) and something for the body.

-The background can be whatever you fancy to go with your chicken.

- Tiny bit for beak

- red for comb and wattle and some fusible webbing eg bondaweb or you can use glue if you haven't any.

- embroidery thread for feet

Hand sew or machine. Neutral colour thread is good or to match your fabric. Grey works with most fabric.

See you soon :D hope Photobucket's working for me. :anxious::anxious::anxious:

:? Sorry Plum, no idea - my Mod Initiation Course didn't cover anything technical! I know others have said they're not getting notifications but I'm receiving them so I don't think it's a forum-wide problem - for example, I just received a notification for this.

Might be worth going through your settings to check that nothing has been changed that would somehow make you opted out of notifications?

Edited to add: if you go to User Control Panel and click 'manage subscriptions' you should see a list of threads that you are subscribed to. See what shows up there?

Your internet can't be as bad as my photobucket issues but I think I've beaten it into submission.

You should have received a fabric placement guide (the coloured one) and two templates.

Step one - trace the two templates onto the tracing paper, parchment or whatever you have. We're going to remove it after sewing. If you want to leave it in you can use non adhesive interfacing or we used to use nappy liners (unused).

Now you need a FART (fabric acquisition road trip)

Right are you ready to sew :D

1. Take the template with numbers 1 -8 but leave a good margin of paper round it.

2. You need to place a piece of fabric over section 1 on the back of the template right side up. Make sure you cover all edges, the seam allowance on one side and you have a straight edge overlapping the line you're going to sew between section 1 and 2.

3. Take your fabric for section 2. Be generous you can trim it later and it's so hard if you are mean. Place it right sides together with the edge matching piece 1 and pin. (see pic).

4. Sew the seam with the paper facing you. Drop your stitch length to about 1.5, it'll make the papers easier to remove. (sorry just added that). Turn over and flip the seam open and press by running a thumbnail along the seam. You can then flip it back and trim the seam allowance but be careful not to clip the paper!!!!

Don't worry about trimming the rest of the sides, they'll be dealt with as we go along.

5. Move on to section 3. Fold back the paper along the seam line between 2 & 3 and trim the fabric back to about 1/4" beyond the line. I'll add a pic when I've won the fight with photoblinkinbucket Yeh I won !

Take fabric for section 3 and place it right sides together on section 2 matching the straight edge. Pin and sew as before.

Well done you're doing great have some chocolate. Unless like me you didn't use a big enough bit of fabric and had to undo it.

Oooh Pimmsy Plum! That looks fab. I've got my new laptop up and running so well behind now! They brought it over last night and been playing catch up.

Exciting!!! Luvvychicky - you'll be fine I promise. I've not done this before - I may have a go with the treadle for this!

Also thank you Olly - my notifications never work so I've followed your instructions too. Hopefully I've clicked the right bits!

Edited to add I'm so used to not clicking the notify I had to look to make sure it was ticked!
