daverave
One of my commercial browns is under the weather - she isn't moving much and just kind of stands in almost a squatting position (legs more apart than usual). She's also not eating much and have just noticed a lot of white/yellow stuff (I assume poo!) stuck to her bottom. This is my first experience of illness with my three hens.. any guidance please?! mullethunter
Could it be egg stuck to her?
daverave
Could it be egg stuck to her? I don't think it is. Have also noticed white/yellow runny droppings in the coop.
Cat tails
Sounds like she is quite poorly! Could you pick her up and give her a feel? Put your hand between her legs on her belly. It should feel firm and warm. Definitely not squishy and hot. A squishy bottom resembles a balloon filled with water. One of my hens showed similar symptoms: standing slightly squatted, feeling very poorly and loads of loose poo. She had some kind of infection, most likely of her ovaries. If she has a squishy bottom, then it won't go away on its own and a visit to the vet is in order.
daverave
Just gave her a bath and massage with oil in case she is egg bound. But it does feel like there's water under her stomach. She's lost a lot of weight too. Have topped up the drinker with a vitamin drink but she doesn't seem to be interested.
The Dogmother
Sounds like peritonitis; does she pant and go blue in the face when she sits down?
Cat tails
I'm not a vet, but she does sound quite ill and it will need some treatment. I really would suggest you take her to a vet. It's sad to leave them suffering.
daverave
Sounds like peritonitis; does she pant and go blue in the face when she sits down? Have not noticed her turn blue but she is panting a little. Let her back out after drying her but she's gone straight into the coop.
The Dogmother
If you're not sure that you have the experience to diagnose and treat her at home, then I would recommend that you get her to the vet soonest.
