Grandmashazzie
As you may know I foster and occasionally have babies. I love to give them a crocheted blanket, the sort of holey ones. It then becomes their ' cuddly ' and it helps when they move to adoptive family. I am a good enough knitter so I thought I would learn crochet to do some blankets....well I went to classes and I am rubbish. The granny square and shark fin has me beat. I wondered could I get same holey effect with the right knitting pattern and needles. I have a wool shop nearby but would like to sound knowledgeable when I visit. LAB
Are you a member at Ravelry? They are my go to place for everything knitting and crochet. I'd look into lace knitting patterns. Or you could up your knitting needle size or decrease your yarn size for a lacy feel to the fabric. That would take up much less yarn and work within your comfort zone. I'd keep up with crochet though. The hardest part is usually tension and you learned that with knitting. Crochet is so much faster and so versatile! It uses up way more yarn though and is bulky. I can make a large baby blanket in a day though when needed. I have to bring out my knitting machine frames to get the same speed and its not nearly as varied in pattern selection. Maybe watch some youtube videos to see technique and practice. For holey blankets, crochet is amazing! My DH only wants blankets without holes and that is harder to come up with patterns for. I love lacy crochet fabric making!
Olly
I'm anothe big fan of Ravelry - lots of patterns on there. I'm sure there are suitable knitting patterns, although I'd also second the advice to persevere with crochet, it will start to make sense. Grandmashazzie
Thank you all. I will persevere with crochet, though the phrase can't teach old dogs new tricks springs to mind. I was at wool shop today and got holey ish knitting pattern. There are 178 stitches and pattern is 6 rows 4 of which are knit,it is no exaggeration that it took nearly 2 hours to do 2 patterned rows ! Cast on was by thumb method which I hadn't done before, I don't know what sort of learner I am but it took me ages putting wool this way, that way until it clicked what I was supposed to do and then it was so simple so when this blanket is finished I will look at u tube for crochet.
