Maxine1
I was advised to get just two chickens when I bought my eglu, as I was planning to keep them in the run. But I've created a bigger space for them now - and some people say you should always have three. Should I try introducing another one, or leave things as they are? Daphne
Leave it as it is. The 2 oldies will most likely gang up on the newbie. When one of your original birds dies then get 2 more. Your original hen will have the advantage it being her home turf and introductions stand a better chance of being successful
Cat tails
Starting out with three is adviced as you won't be stuck with just one hen, when one dies. But then you do need space for at least 4 hens as you would be adding two new hens to your remaining two. I definitely wouldn't add one now as she likely will be bullied. But as Daphne says, adding two (or even one) when one hen dies is possible.
