Chick Chick
Hello, I have four chicks that are just seven weeks old. Currently they are in the cube run all day but I am taking them indoors at night so they are at house temperature over night. Would it be ok to start putting them in the cube over night now? Chicklover
They'll be fine. With the bedding and each others body heat, they'll keep warm : )
Chick Chick
Thanks! I have just put shavings under the roosting bars, is that enough or will they need something else? I was going to leave the nesting box bit closed off is that ok?
Chicklover
They might prefer to huddle together on the actual shavings before being on the perch. Theyll most likely be scared and unsettled for a time because of their new home so having each other to cuddle up to will give them security. You can introduce the bar at a later time or they will find it when they're ready. I don't think it matters about the nesting box.
mullethunter
Mine go out by day at 6 weeks and then all the time from 7 weeks just like yours. Mine are in an Eglu Go (they’ll move into the Cube with the big girls when they’re a bit older) so I fill the poo tray up so much with bedding that it’s level with the roosting bars. Chick Chick
Thank you. They were all well this morning What do you put under the bars mullethunter? I’m just wondering if shavings is the best.
mullethunter
I use Easichick which is very small wood chip. Not quite shavings. I find it really economical because after they’ve grown up I only use it in the nest box and it composts well.
Chick Chick
Thank you mullethunter, that sounds great, especially being able to add it to the compost heap!
The Dogmother
Shavings tend to get a bit damp, and don't really compost brilliantly. I generally use Aubiose, but in the winter when conditions are a bit damper, i cut it with Easichick, just to break up the texture a little.
