Mel (& Paul)
Have no daughters - but alot of my Mums jewellery will need to be handed on through siblings and their children, so need to specify certain things. Those sort of things can cause more arguments than anything - so it is must to specify things!

bellekatz
And how do you decide who to leave your kids to? OH has a sister about 20 miles away, but her kdis are now grown up and apart from her there is no other family close by and the kids would hate to leave school/friends etc? Do I approach friends and see how they would feel?
Couperwife
I've heard that the wills from WHSmiths are very good.

OH has a sister about 20 miles away, but her kdis are now grown up and apart from her there is no other family close by and the kids would hate to leave school/friends etc? Do I approach friends and see how they would feel? That's a really difficult one. If i ever felt that my Dad wasn't up to the job, the next choice is my best friend. She also has a young son, her and her husband are godparents to my youngest. We have the same approach to discipline and she treats my children exactly as she treats her own. We have discussed it and she knows she could 'inherit' them. I am down to inherit hers if anything should happen to them. It's also about how they will be brought up - we are both Christians so the children would have that continuity. Not an easy decision though by any means - we are fortunate, they also have an older, half sister with children who I would be happy to leave them too. She just lives further away. Popcorn
Well, I might as well put my request in then seeing as it's the flavour of the thread at the moment. Can I have the tractor and the electric fencing please Lesley This is something we've talked and talked and talked about since having Stefan. We can't decide who to name as legal guardians for Stefan. My brother would be ideal....loves children, younger than me, has a fantastic soon to be wife and loves the outdoors. My only issue is the distance. It would mean a huge upheaval for Stefan. Loosing his parents would be enough in itself without having to move schools, leave family and friends behind etc. We thought the alternative wasn't an option - leaving him to Darren's parents - but what Snowy said has really got me thinking. Giving the will a yearly update might solve the issue for a while and allow us to do the will with peace of mind that it's the best option. Darren's Mum is a child minder, and is VERY fit and active (she beat me at jogging on Ssturday and she's 57! - must get back to the gym) and Stefan adores her, so she would be the perfect choice at the minute. We've already approached a solicitor and have been given a fee of £140. Does that seem steep to you?
The Dogmother
I did mine ages ago Gina,, but it was only £60 then - it may have gone up since then, but I'd shop around. I must renew mine too, but it would mean trying to get time out of work to see theh solicitor
Snowy
We use a company of solicitors who specialise in wills - they came out to see us and took down all our details, prepared the will and sent it to us. They hold it for us and send us a form every year to note any changes. Then they redo the will and send it to us again. Costs us £40 a year that goes out as an automatic direct debit. Can't remember what the initial fee was but can find out if anyone is interested. PM me.

The Dogmother
That sounds like a good deal Snowy - do you know if they have offices round here?
Snowy
They are based in Peterborough but seem to happy to travel most places (not exactly that close to Leicester). No other offices as far as i know Clare.
The Dogmother
Thanks for that Snowy, I will get in touch with the solicitors that did my current will and see what they charge
Olly
We've already approached a solicitor and have been given a fee of £140. Does that seem steep to you? I wouldn't say that was steep - you might get a cheaper quote, but if you think of it as probably 2 hours of work, that sounds about right. Don't forget that they'll be able to advise on Inheritance Tax, whether to divide jointly-owned property and appointing guardians for minor children etc. and will usually store your will safely without charge for you. The deal that Snowy's got sounds interesting, but bear in mind that most people only update their will every ten years or so, so you could have paid out £400 over that time and not really needed to change it. Cinnamon
Blimey - I have just been quoted £300 - £600, depending on how much work was involved If anyone can recommend a specialist solicitor around here,I would be grateful
