I am absolutely devastated !!

 

Lost our special little girl Daisy-Mae yesterday. 7/8/07

 

Noticed the day before she was a bit off but nothing major she just seemed a bit down but wasn't eating.Gave her lots of TLC and thought we would see how she was the next day. Well got up yesterday to find her just sitting down on the floor not eating or drinking and she kept shutting her eyes. I was really worried so I made a vets appointment. She looked really bad and I was really upset. We let them out to free range and she could hardly get up and just sat on the floor outside the run. Her crop was really swollen. I thought she might have an impacted or sour crop ?! But if ever there was a lesson to be learnt about not self diagnosing this was it. Thank God I took her to the vet because it was not impacted crop as I thought. She was really not moving much when I got her to the vet. He said that her crop was swollen but not due to sour crop she was in pain and she had a swelling in her tummy and it was full of fluid. He said that it was nothing she had eaten,or anything to do with what we had done,(as she was treated like royalty) more like a tumor or growth to feel but she would not last very long and told me the only kind thing was to put her to sleep.

 

Having only had the girls 3 weeks they have become part of our family and I was really devastated. It was an agonising decision but the only fair one for Daisy-Mae. What made it harder was we got 5 girls one for each of us my hubby and I and one for each of our 3 children. Daisy-Mae was mine and (not that you should have favorites) but she was my favorite and had in the short time we had her become especially close to me. She was the only one so far to let us pick her up willingly and give a cuddle to in the day. She would come to me and eat corn from my hand and was the most placid little thing ever. She was a real gem of the group. It has broken my heart.

 

My hubby was at work when I took her to the vets so it was really hard coz I was on my own. I didn't feel I could wait till today when we could have gone together coz it wouldn't have been fair on Daisy-Mae and as a Mum I just wanted her pain to stop.I rang my hubby to tell him and he was really upset on the phone he was that sad. He said he was amazed how they had become a special part of the family to him.But I was with her and stroked her while they put her to sleep and she had a very peaceful passing. I didn't sleep a wink last night and was too upset to post last night after the vets. I am posting this crying my head off I can hardly see the keys on the keyboard but wanted to share this with you all, as only you know what I am feeling right now. I can't even go in the garden this morning. They are out free ranging now but I can't face seeing them running around without Daisy-Mae just yet.

Jilly, so sorry to hear about Daisy-Mae that's really sad for all of you. At least you did the right thing and it seems to me that chickens can go downhill very fast, there was nothing else you could do. Lots of love and hugs to you and your family

I know how you feel as we lost Elf on Thursday, and watching the others run around with out her is hard, but you did all you could for her, and even though you didn't have her long, she would have been one happy hen

Oh Jilly I am truly sorry to hear your very sad news.

 

I was just the same when we had to have Clucky put to sleep.

 

Try to remember those special cuddles and try not to dwell on her last couple of days. She had a wonderful but short life with you and was loved and cherished to the end.

so sorry to hear your news, we have so much sympathy for you as we lost our Sella yesterday. she had been ill a couple of times but we had been able to get her back on her feet, this time she had just had enough. its so heart breaking losing any pet and your Daisy mae was still so young. its so hard with chucks to see when they are ill it all happens so quickly. you have your memories hold onto that.

SO sorry to hear about Daisy mae.

 

I know completely how you feel about getting attached to them though, our little Sam died suddenly just over a week ago and I still well up now when I think about her.

 

Take comfort in the fact that she had a special time with you and she knew she was loved, think of the good times you had and it will help.
