garlicscapes
Hi all: I am planning to relocate my 3 hens back to the city for the winter. Due to limited backyard space and fencing, they may have to be limited to their Eglu and run. 1. Do you think they will be unhappy with their limited mobility after freeranging all summer? 2. What do you use to keep your birds warm in the winter? 3. How do you keep the water from freezing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. garlicscapes
Thanks Kev - and for the warm welcome. Looks like I need to visit a pet store here in Canada .
Egluntyne
Hello and welcome to the forum garlicscapes. You can use ...these... these in the Eglu. I'm sure you can get them over there. You heat them in the microwave oven.
Mrs Frugal
Hello and welcome!! Good to meet you. There is some advice on the US Omlet forum which might be helpful to you - here in the form of stickies at the top of this section. We don't get such cold winters over here but a few of the American Eglu owners have come up with some ingenious methods of keeping their ladies nice and warm in the snow. chelsea
Welcome to the Forum. I havent been to Canada, but it sure looks like an amazing place!! Im sure we all worry to much about our chickens on here, in Winter I cover the eglu in a duvet (quilt) and waterproof cover (just for my peace of mind) some people dont bother at all - and their chickens are pefectly fine! The eglu is insulated. im sure you get it a lot colder there though, so maybe you need to add extra warmth!

garlicscapes
Thanks everyone! This is a great forum! I live in Toronto, so the weather here is colder in the winter than say, Vancouver. I was hoping there would be an easy solution, as I am not very technically inclined. chickweed
As we no longer have proper winters or even decent summers in the UK, our chickens need to adapt by developing webbed feet and learning to swim.
