carov
Hi there, I have three hybrid hens who started laying last autumn. They live in an Eglu cube with a 3m x 3m run. They are happy and healthy girls who have provided us with lovely eggs. The Columbine hybrid (who is top of the pecking order) stopped laying about 2 weeks ago for no apparent reason and we really miss her beautiful blue eggs. I noticed a slight change in her behaviour yesterday - while still friendly she no longer takes the submissive position when I walk near her. This concerns me because I observed that the hens only began to take that position when they started laying and so have attributed the behaviour to their hormones kicking making them ready for mating. I'm therefore wondering if her egg laying hormones are no longer being produced. I called the lady I bought the hens from and she said that while it is unusual, sometimes hens just stop laying very early. She said that an old man near her who has kept chickens for decades swears by cod liver oil to get chickens to lay. Does anybody know about this? Any other ideas how I can encourage my girl to lay? The Dogmother
It could be that she has just stopped laying, but there are a couple of things to check first: What do yo feed them on and do they get any treats? When did you last worm them and what with?
