......the trailer for a new "comedy" programme called the Choncordes (or similar) which they keep showing on the Beeb.

 

Looks as funny as an ingrowing toenail, with two absolute herberts advertising it, if you can call it that. It makes me want to hurl something heavy at the telly.

 

Must make a point of watching something else.

Switching channels without asking others who might be watching is forbidden at Egluntine Towers......not that we spend all our time sitting square eyed.

 

I reckon it could be grounds for divorce!

Sorry Egluntine but it makes me laugh! It is one of the few things on TV recently that has made me look up from my knitting!

 

I'm desparately trying to finish a gansey that I'm doing. Its in the round, in 5 ply, with a complicated pattern, and I'm nearly done and it is driving me mad. I am so old that I have to have my seeing glasses off in order to see the pattern - and my wine glasses empty or I can't concentrate.

 

but you don't want to know that.

 

But I do want to see the Conchordes 'cos I did think the trailor was good

I think it probably is Bron - they're knitted on the round - I've got an ancient one that my grandma knitted.

When I get my camera out I'll post you a picture of one of my handkitted ganseys. I was incorrect in inferring that gansey only applies to the Norfolk version as you sometimes hear of Aran Ganseys - but then again some books on traditional knitting have ganseys and Aran as different.

 

My understanding is that Gansey is the correct traditional word for this sort of knitted garment - however it can be written as 'guernsey'; which has come into more common usage for commercially produced versions. Gansey is particularly used in Yorkshire, the Shetlands, Suffolk and Norfolk although in East Suffolk it is also written as ganzy.

 

Interesting that the two Channel Island names Jersey and Guernsey are used as generic words for wollen tops nowdays. don't know why but someone might!

Here are a couple of photos of Norfolk Ganseys. The first one is about 16 years old and was the first one I knitted; I wear it a lot during the winter. It is a Carter pattern - the pattern for the Carter family. The second one I knitted a couple of years ago and is a Fisher family pattern.

 

Both families - Carter and Fisher - were fishing families from the North End, Kings Lynn.

 

Before the pattern starts there are three ridges - rigs and furs (ridges and furrows) which demarcate the join between the land (plain bottom half) and the sea (patterned top part). The pattern is individual to the family.

 

I'm sure you are well bored by ganseys now so I promise I won't post anymore stuff about them! they are not as smartly photographed as yours - I just put them down on the floor!

Ah, now they're completely different from Guernsey Guernseys - they are much more complex and have a cuff at the bottom rather than a square finish.
