Hello,

Quick Q I am new to chicken owning & have an Eglu cube. There is nowhere in the inside to hand a drinker or food. I have read some posts where people advise no food or water in the coop. Do they really need no food or water overnight?
TIA

No they don't!  They get up in the morning and make straight for the feeders/drinkers, but trust us, there is no need to put either in the coop, and in fact you will be asking for trouble in terms of mess and potentially attracting vermin.  Welcome to the forum BTW 😀  Don't be afraid to ask anything, we were all newbies once, and most of us still have plenty of scope to learn more even if we have been doing this for a while.  What sort of chooks have you got or are you still at the planning stage?  Its very exciting either way!

Thank you so much for your reply. After looking after so many different animals it felt a bit alien to me to give them no water overnight. But I will do as you advise.

We got 3 Lohman Brown POLs on Saturday. They seem to be settling in well. One is more confident & one is more shy. But they liked to be talked to so we are getting to know each other at the mo.

You can't go wrong, you should get plenty of eggs and the girls are some of the friendliest around.  I am a great believer in chatting away to anything sentient, chicken are more sensitive than many people realise, and they do respond to your voice.  Have fun with them!

Welcome!  Chickens go into a semi- comotose state when they roost.   So don’t need water or food.   Take food and water in from the run too overnight if you don’t want to attract rats.   It’s important to take water in as well as the food as rats need water to absorb food. Therefore if no water is available, they look elsewhere.

Enjoy them!  They are addictive
