Helly Welly
Does anyone know anything about these poultry suppliers? We are after another four hens as we cannot keep up with demand for our eggs. I found this place on the web but OH is suspicious as they are visit by appointment only and its a local, small business. I don't share his suspicions but i'm more trusting. Any help before tomorrow greatly appreciated as i really want to go and get them tomorrow.
Cinnamon
I don't know of them, but I wouldn't let the appointment thing put you off. If I did this sort of thing I would work by appointment too,so I could have some 'me' time. You may find you get better service from a small, local business than from a larger enterprise - my chap I buy from is a one man band who has his set up on allotments out the back of his house, & it couldn't be better. Go & take a look, & if you are unhappy in any way then go elsewhere & just chalk it up to experience.
Christian
The breeder down the road from me always does appointments only. She has 2 children at school and rides horses, so isn't always around. I wouldn't worry about the 'appointment' thing. I guess its just so that they are in when you go. Good luck choosing your new girls! I'm really . BERTIE MCSQUIRTY
i have passed this place when going into work, if its the one i think it is, it looks a tidy place and their is a sign on the outside to say they are breeders of poultry. i have never been into it though
Snowy
Sorry I've never heard of it either Helly, but I'll be interested to see the outcome of your visit. Might be a bit TOO handy for me to resist!
Snowy
I've just looked at their website - they have all sorts available now!!!!! They are only down the road from me! Hm, wonder if I should ring them tomorrow
BERTIE MCSQUIRTY
right had a look at their website, it is the one i thought it was. if you leave whetstone at the roundabout / dual carriageway and head towards cosby. its right at the end of whetstone on the opposite side of the road to the dog and gun pub. i think they have some s"Ooops, word censored!" cars there But it appears a tidy and well run place. i might poke my head round the door on tues myself "just to book an appointment"
Helly Welly
Thanks everyone, i knew i could rely on you Think we'll give them a ring in the morning, its got to be worth a look when they are 10 minutes down the road! Might see you there Snowy
MiniMinx
Hi, We've been there, don't worry about the appointments only bit, its just because its a small holding and i think its more of a hobby than a business, she started breeding as she couldn't find anywhere decent locally to buy chickens and its just sort of took off from there. She was ever so nice and really helpful, she had quite a few different breeds including a field full of ex batts that she's rescued (I think she sells them for a £1 each). We didn't end up buying from her but that was because we ended up with more chooks from omlet than we had originally planned for - but i would certainly consider buying from there in the future (only downside is that some of the pure breeds did seem a little expensive to me)

arowland17
i agree, don't be put off by appointments only, the lady in leatherhead we got ours from runs hers like that as she breeds chickens in her free time from her back garden so I guess doesn't want people turning up to her house whenever they feel! BERTIE MCSQUIRTY
let us know how you get on please. also........just been to the pub, spoke to our local chap who has 2 dozen chickens. he told me he can get me in a few weeks time, chickens for 50p from the chicken/ egg farm (hybrid breed) that are 36 weeks old as they are due to rotate their stock. these are not battery hens as they free range and they are located on the outskirts of smeeton westerby. he also has a few chickens from westlodge farm in desborough which he buys for £3 each. he negotiates with them and always gets them down from £10 to this amount. Snowy
Hi Bertie, Merrydale was lovely. She has lots of the white mottled hybrids left and it's worth a visit to see her gorgeous pekins and orpingtons. I have a friend with an allotment in Kibworth, he gets his chooks from the place at Smeeton. I've also seen the ones at West Lodge, also a lovely place, but both of these only do the ginger hybrid. See my post Birthday Present to see the chooks I got from Merrydale.
