I've confused my hens! 🤷‍♀️

Recommended Posts

Help!

The other day I was cleaning out the cube. Door of run open so chickens wandering out and around the garden. Then two of the hens appeared on the step of the cube and came in whilst I was cleaning. after a little chat I lifted them out of the back of the cube into the garden. Now those two hens when they have been out in the garden now try to get back in via the back of the cube and not the run door that is open...I've confused them?

But why??

The other night they were out and it was dusk and they were jumping to try and get in the back....when the other two merrily walked in the door. Why?? 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣🤷🏻‍♀️🤣🤷🏻‍♀️🤣🤷🏻‍♀️

This morning they are all.out and about wandering round the garden and one of them making such a racket because she wants to lay but doesn't know how to get back into the run? The door is open and they have all been in and out eating.

I've lifted her in and she ran straight away and up the steps of the cube to lay!

The other one has been out in the garden went back in to lay and now is pacing up and down confused of how to find the door to get out?

How do I unconfuse those two hens?

I've tried in and out with treats and they are fine. But when they are on their own they've forgotten what to do. They are not new hens and have been living in their coop and run for over a year.

Anyone know how to reset their SATNAV?!

That's a new one on me MamaCoop! Chickens are 3D space aware and know where they want to be. We have seen them confused by a coop moving position by more than a few metres and also trying to get into the nest box (broody) from all directions when the pop-hole has been shut to keep them out. They shouldn't be confused by coming out of the wrong door just once? However that's something I can't remember ever doing, because of the way our enclosures are set up. I have taken a bantam out of someone else's coop because she jumped in whilst I was cleaning it and she never went back. I can see the treats idea not working; all they are thinking about is food and not directions.

All I can suggest is leave them to it and put them to bed or to lay through the run and to the pop-hole door if necessary. Sure they will sort themselves out in the end.
