how can i reduce the cost of a lovely eglu?

Recommended Posts

Unfortunately, or fortunately if you already have one, they hold their price very well - it's difficult to get a bargain.

Omlet do reconditioned ones, I think you have to ring them to see what they have in, but they are not hugely discounted - someone else on here will know what you pay for a recon one.

Otherwise, keep an eye on the thread on this forum about Eglus for sale, and act quickly if you see one. There's also a list on there of Eglus on eBay.

Good luck - Eglus are well worth waiting for!

Our Eglu was a re-conditioned one and when it arrived we couldn't tell that it wasn't brand new. It is thoroughly cleaned and came with new roosting bars. It cost us £355 instead of the usual £395. Obviously if you have it without chickens then it will be cheaper still (but you'll still need to get chickens and food, etc)

If you're interested then just ring Omlet and they'll tell you what colours they've got in at the time. I wanted a purple one but they only had green when I rang so that's what we got.

I bought a reconditioned eglu just over a month ago - they had quite a choice of colours at that time. You could only just tell that it was second hand (which doesn't matter once you've had it a while yourself) and I got it for £300 (no chickens). It's not a huge saving but it paid for the extras (which I ordered at the same time to save on postage).

Everything else but the eglu seemed to be brand new.

I since discovered that they do reconditioned converters and extensions too(after I'd ordered a new one, naturally!) but they didn't have any in stock when I phoned.

I got my original Eglu on Ebay, I set up a local search and bid on a couple but they went too high. One came up fairly near that was a week old (dunno to this day why she didn't know about the money back guarantee). I emailed her before any bids went on asking if she had a BIN price and she said £250 - I nearly bit her hand off and picked it up the next day. Reason for sale was she had bought it without talking to hubby and he was totally against the idea of chickens had massive rows and she just needed to get rid of it in a hurry!

I've just bought a recon cube for £335 plus postage, shows no signs of use at all - the roosting bars fell apart (they all do) but I swear they have never had chickens on (some stains just don't come off!).

Thats amazing for the cube price! I can't find the reconditioned ones online which is why I was asking.

My husband was totally against the idea of chooks too and we have argued for weeks but he has come round now and I'm 'allowed' a green one now, although he's bound to chuck it into every future argument we have re money, mess, pets etc....

I'll give omlet a ring - has anyone collected their eglu from omlet? Not sure if you can do this - I have an estate but baby would be in baby seat so not sure if this would be do-able!

If you search for "recon" in the shop you get the price, that's without a run as I already built one - which was easier than I thought too. I think you would have to ring to order it . I think it would fit in the Estate it came in 4 boxes.

If you look at my Omlet famous blog you can see it all piled up and also a picture of the boxes it came in.

- it's a ford focus estate so this would probably be okay wouldn't it?

OH says you should easily get the eglu in your car, the only concern would be the run. The standard run is 2 metres long. Maybe ask Omlet to deliver that? I think its £7.99ish delivery for the run????

By the way penguinmad the tree with the big leaf on your blog is a fig tree -should have figs in the spring/summer

Thanks for that - it's a nightmare trying to identify everything in that garden.

The run in sections will fit in your car, I had an eglu and run in mine and your boot space should be slightly longer - don't take more than 2 people though as you may need the back seats down!

Would the run be broken into pieces? It looks like they would be metre pieces joined together somehow?

Silly me!

Yes it can be broken down in 4 pieces each a metre long!

Good luck!

:D

P.s Pengy, the apple tree? could be a cherry tree. Mine has very similar leaves to yours!

Sarah, it'll all fit in fine, a friend got his into the back of his tiny japanese hatchback with the back seat down. best make sure that Omlet know that you're coming to collect and remind them 24 hours beforehand - they're not set up to receive visitors on-site and it isn't easy to find. Are you in the area too then?

Don't ask. It'll make you feel slightly ill.

I would suggest keeping an eye out on the forum and on ebay, I found my original eglu for £200 buy it now, and it was super-close too. I wish I'd known they did reconditioned cubes though  Still I had it very quickly and I did buy the run and the extension.
