Chickens and fireworks!

Recommended Posts

This is my first post as I am new to the forum and new to keeping chickens. I think the Omlet forum is fab and great for someone like me who is trying to learn all about chickens. I have 4 girls - Chili (Sussex Star), Pepper (Speckledy), Lucky (Light Sussex) and Blue (Blackrock). My question is should I bring my girls inside on fireworks night? They don't even like it when they hear a car horn and go running back inside the hen house. I have read that I should put them in a box and keep them inside overnight. Does anybody have any advice on this as I don't want them upset.

Also does anybody have any good porridge recipes as I love feeding them treats! :D

Hi Chili,

I've just popped your question into the chicken section as I think it will probably get more replies here than in the clinic so I hope you get plenty of answers.

I have taken my hens indoors on Bonfire Night for the last 3 years as it's like a war zone round here with great big explosions going off which make the car alarms start! This year I've got 7 hens rather than the 3 of previous years so I can't do that so they'll have to take their chances outside. New Years Eve round here is also noisy and I haven't taken the hens in then and they've been absolutely fine. If you have neighbours who are planning fireworks in their gardens, it might be better to bring your hens in as they really can be very loud and frightening for pets but if it's just general background noise, they'll probably be fine.

Porridge? Mine love porridge with some sultanas, a little sprinkling of sunflower seeds and some wheatgerm mixed in. When one of them is a bit under the weather, I drizzle some honey over it too to give them plenty of energy.

Hello Chili and welcome.

Mine don't bat an eyelid when fireworks go off, so I have never bothered to bring them in. Mind you...they are so used to them as the local inconsiderate oik was in the habit of letting them off at all hours. He is a guest of Her Majesty at present.

Bet he won't be letting them off this year then

Hi chilli. My hens dont seem too botherd with the fireworks. We make sure that they are shut in. We havent brought them in before.

The problem with fireworks is that they dont just do one night it seems to go on forever... Which is a real downer if you have pets of any sort. If I were 'in charge' :D I would make it an offence to let them off any other time other than Bonfire night, its sooo tiresome.

If you end up bringing them in you may have them in for more than one night.

My dog goes absoultley loopy everytime he hears one. I think he takes it as a personal attack on our house and wants to 'get' whatever it is.

All things considered with the fuss my dog makes its probably quieter out side

Eglutine, I bet you had some good ideas of where you would have liked to stick one of those fireworks

What about some kind of quilt/carpet/rug or someting draped over their sleeping quarters for extra sound proofing?

it's all very worrying, this is our first bonfire night with our girls, there were a few fireworks last night and the girls didn't make a peep but we get loads on bonfire night, really loud too- the sort that set off house/car alarms. The air is always full of smoke afterwards too.

Our coop is wooden so not too keen in draping anything over it made of material in case a f/work lands on it or if it rains, the coop is then draped in a sodden wet blanket/carpet etc

I just wish councils would ban the sale of f/works (except quiter ones and sparklers) and stick to organised displays.

i can only hope that our girls will be okay.
