Cinnamon
With sweets we only let them have those at the weekend. And only if they have done one the few jobs which we ask of them each week - room tidying, sheet stripping, paper bin emptying etc. Also, if they don't eat a good portion of veggies at tea time, then they have to have a piece of fruit before pudding. Some of my friends think I am far to strict with the girls, only letting them have sweets once they have done something to earn it. But then I look at my girls behavoiur & compare it to other peoples children, who seem to be forever demanding sweet stuff ,& getting it most of the time I think it teaches them a good lesson, & also I think it stops them from taking me for granted & always expecting me to tidy up after them. At 11 & 13 they are capable of clearing up their own mess!

Guest
We found the cocopops straws this morning while doing the shopping (roll on next Monday when I can do the shopping in peace again!), and Duncan, my eldest, picked them up, inspected them, screwed his nose up in disgust and threw them back again. I've never let the kids eat sugary cereal - why start the day on a sugar high, you surely just setting yourself up for a fall later on! Karen & co.
I certainly will not be buying chocolate straws for the children, my friends think I'm a meany for not letting them have sugar on cereal, they never have and now don't want too Everything in moderation, with treats as treats, I hope will continue to work. Cate in NZ
my friends think I'm a meany for not letting them have sugar on cereal, they never have and now don't want too Karen, I so agree with you, but it nearly caused WW3 the very first time they stayed overnight with MIL. She served them strawberries with cream and sugar with their evening meal and then Ricicles with sugar for breakfast. I hit the roof when I found out, I think all those things are quite sweet enough as it is without extra sugar, she'd gone out and bought them especially because that's what she thought they'd like. I think she spent quite a while after that seeing me as a neurotic mother. She still can't quite believe that my children even drink tea without sugar, never tried it, so they don't miss it, but she considers that very unusual, muttered with a faintly disapproving inflection. chocchick
Maybe this should be the healthy eating thread, but why is it parents give you loads of unhealthy things when you go to visit?! It is lovely, but maybe not good for me as I tend to overindulge as it is. They then tell you that you are putting on weight!
